We had Rocky out tonight and were petting him for quite a bit when mom noticed that Rocky appears to have decent sized sores all over his body. :( They look red and open.

A few months back I noticed something like this on his shoulder, but we assumed it was a cut because it healed up pretty quickly. Now, I KNOW there is NOTHING in his c&c cage that he could've cut himself on like these are.

They're about dime sized, under his fur. I noticed these past few times I've brushed him he looses more hair than the girls, but I thought this was maybe because his is a little thicker. Any ideas?

Thanks all.

I haven't noticed him scratching any more than normal, and he's in my room so I watch him quite a bit. I mean, he does sometimes but it seems quite normal. It's not like intense scratching, just an itch here and there.

has he a cage mate? just wondering whether it could be bite marks? if not maybe an allergy could be causing it. if concerned take rocky to the vet to get checked out. sending hugs and cuddles to you, rocky and the girls. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Choloe - nope, Rock-man likes his space more than a cage mate. :)

The only thing allergy wise I could think of was this new hay I changed to- Timothy. They were getting Orchard grass, he's been on Timothy for about two weeks now.

Katiep - vet appt is set for Tuesday at 3:20 (that was the earliest they were available :( )
Is there anything I may be able to do to keep him comfortable until then? Maybe put an anti itch cream on him or something?

And thanks for your well wishes. :smitten:

What do you bed him on? some types of bedding can cause fungal skin infections in guineas, especially scented woodshvings. It does sound like mites or fungal, a vet would be best. Ask the vet to use topical (skin drops) or oral for mites rather than injection if possible (injection really hurts them) You could try some kamilosan (human nipple cream) to help soothe the area. Let us know how he gets on :)

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, it definitly sounds like mites. And I'll be sure to ask the vet for topical.
LavenderJade - he's bedded on kiln dried pine, although when he was younger whoever had him before me bedded him on peanut shells... literally.

Update: I managed to squeeze Rocky into the vet's yesterday. The lady did a skin scrape against my wishes, and didn't find anything. But she did give him some meds to treat him for mites anyway.

It makes me angry when vets insist on skin scrapes.they are uncomfortable for the gp,and a waste of time and money. The money is what they do them for of course.
