Mummy I don't like this medicine

So Teddy is on Rimadyl, Baytril and Fibreplex for a couple of lumps that have an infection in them. Giving the medicine has certainly been funny.
The rimadyl is a tiny tablet that every time I put in his mouth would be spat out again, even if I tried to wash it down with the baytril. The baytril was met with a lot of head shaking just like a little boy who doesnt want the medicine. Luckily the fibreplex is carrot flavoured so not so much of a problem.
Its been nearly a week now, and I have the routine mastered, even though it means me having to stick my finger further back in his mouth where I can feel his molars! :... (Please correct me if I shouldnt be doing that) the baytril is gracefully being taken now with the reward of the carrot flavour "nice medicne" afterward.
The only thing that makes me feel bad is the look I get when I put him back in the cage, as if to say why did you do that mummy?
We are going back to the vets tomorrow. Not sure what she is going to say as the lumps are still there, or whether she will want to do another biopsy or not. I'm sure Teddy is hoping that he can stop taking his medicine :)

Anyone else have fun and games with medication?
 
have you considered mixing the baytril and rimadyl (crushed) with something like a little bit of ribena? Makes the baytril much more palatable (it's horrible stuff, I dunno if you've tasted it, but it's really bitter)

Baytril is about the most horrible tasting thing you can get - I made the mistake once to taste a bit that had been spilled on my arm, and I very much rued it!

You can mix baytril with a bit of fruit juice or water.

I find it easier to give tablets if I grind them into powder and mix them with as many syringefuls of water as the tablet needs to be cut into (i.e. 1/2 tablet = 2 syringefuls of water). By shaking the mix before you suck it up into a syringe, you get the dose pretty right.
 
I agree, Baytril is very bitter so our vet advised us to mix with a little bit of Ribena. My boy just hated the syringing but we got it down to a fine art in the end rolleyes

I taste most things that I medicate my pets with - and baytril is bad, but panacur is much worse! My piggies think so too!
 
I'm having fun trying to get Bob to take his meds. rolleyes He moves his head backwards and forwards, up and down anything to get away from that syringe. :))
I've started holding him so his head is tucked under my chin and standing in front of the mirror so I can see his mouth. The first time was a nightmare, he peed and pooed all over me and ended up wearing more of it that taking it.
Last night he protested a little but got the hang of it. I wasn't helping as I was laughing at him looking so cute!
 
I'm loving everyone's story about how they give meds...so funny:o. I think everyone can relate to the head nodding, the turning away and wearing the meds.

So funny.:(|)
 
oooooooh Ted whee don't blame you at all, baytril is digusting :)>>> (i thought i'd try it once when having to give it to Duke....then i knew why he was disgusted!)
Our vets flavour it with different flavourings, usually a fruit mix, i can't use that now tho with one of my girls cause she's not allowed fruits etc.. the flavouring does help make it not quite as tart flavouring :x
 
I put some juice in his baytil this morning, and it went down a lot easier! Thanks all for the tip!
 
Just got back from the vet. Although the antibiotics and anti-inflammatorys did nothing to really shrink the lumps, she is happy for him to be signed off and come off the meds! Teddy breathed a big sigh of relief! :(|)

She did say because of where one of them is (on his nipple) to keep an eye on it and if it gets any bigger then to come back and talk about surgrey - its about the size of a small marble at the moment. She didnt see the point of putting him through the surgery now as she thought it would probably come back. As long as it stays the size it is, all is ok.
I left the surgery with a smile on my face and a lot lighter knowing that he was going to be ok! :(|)
