Hi guys, just a quick question.

I want to vary my guinea whiks diet and just want some ideas on what they would like and is safe for them to scoff, my lot love kale, spinach and coriander but want to introduce them to some other treats that would be good for them now summers approaching.

Thanks guys 😄

My lot love dandelion leaves. I have soooooooooooo many in my garden they have a few (around 4 each) every morning before breakfast pellets. Now they expect them. They also love a mixture of dried forage which I got from Products – Piggie Parcels .

Ooooohhh i think mine would like some of that stuff, thanks ye

Mine like green beans, lettuce and celery.

Cucumbers are great for summer times as they contain 95% percent water(snack only). This means your piggies will stay well and hydrated. Another great food (As a snack only) is blueberries. High in antioxidants, and your guinea pigs will love them. Pretty high in sugar though, so keep that in mind. -Go easy on the spinach, as it contains high amounts of calcium, as well as, oxalates. When fed together the oxalates act as small magnets to calcium and form crystals in the bladder. Generally referred to as bladder stones.

My pigs love bell peppers, the beetroot from the bistro salad mix, dandelions, hawthorn, plantain, cow parsley. Any kind of lettuce (except iceberg), cucumber, celery. Anything really. It normally takes around 2 tried of me giving it them before they will eat a new food. I forage every day for my buns and give the pigs what I know to be safe for them. There is not much research out there about pigs eating wild forage like there is for buns so I try to be careful.

I think the research is better for rabbits because of them living wild in the u.k where as guinea pigs dont here.

very true. Its a shame really because there is so much wild forage out there. I am very careful what i give and tend to try everything in small amounts. Forage id really helping them to get used to me now because they where desperate to get it out of my hand. I also dry forage out and store for winter. They all prefer it over vegetable.

Forage is lovely to give to guinea pigs. Mine love store bought ones. The advantage guinea pigs have though, is they dont pick up deseases that domestic rabbits do off of wild rabbits 👍. So no vaccinations needed.

For treats, my Finn and Lara love herbs like basil, coriander or cilantro, parsley, dandelion, and etc. They will finish herbs before they get to lettuce. I do give them some fruits but not much.

A favorite is baby carrots! Mine also love eating bean sprouts, green beans, cucumber, and cilantro. Once or twice a week, I'll pick fresh grass for them and rinse it under water. I haven't tried dandelion leaves yet, because every time I go to buy them, they are sold out!

I pick dandelion leaves for mine as they grow in abundance in my garden. I have some seeds to grow my own for when I move as I have noticed there are none where I'm moving to. I got the seeds from Shelled Warriors.
