Murphys little bald patch

I have noticed tonight when i put Murphy to bed that he has a little bald batch on his back the same place where he had one when he came to me as a foster piggy from the RSPCA I noticed it as his hair had parted so i looked and its a bit bald and his skin under neath is very slightly flakey it does not look red or sore.

When he came he had to have three injections over three weeks.

Will take him to the vets in the morning will Poppy have to be treated as well? She seems ok but does living with him mean she will have the same problems?
 
One of my pigs that i got from a pet shop :( (yes i know will not do it again) had a bold patch on her back about the size of a ten pence It was flaky round the edges. I used an anti fungal shampoo from Gorgeous Guinea and some ivomec drops and it cleared up in a few weeks and never came back.

Are ivomec drops from the vets?
 
Poppy will not ne4cisarily get the mites.It is no longer necessary to give the Ivermectin by injections which are painful.There is a topical version called Zeno 450 available now.You can get this from your vet.You just part the hair and put 2 drops from the pipette on the back of the neck,then on the skin along the spine.

Repeat in 10 days.

Cheers Mary i will pop to vets tomorrow as i have got the day off and ask for some. :)
 
Got mine from the net. It cost about £25 (pharmac web shop) but some pet shops sell it too. If you Have a good one near you they will advise you.

Thanks he is totally fine munching on his breakfast not sure why he has got it, bless him he doesnt seem poorly or stressed. :smitten:

Edited: to say got an appt at 9.50 to see the VET. So handy i have got the day off :)

Yeah she is bless her. He would go mad if she didnt go and i think she would be upset too without him. :smitten:

She is massive now Wanda, wish you could see her.

Just got back Murphy has got some Xeno 450 spot on to put on now and again in another month. He said its only slightly scaley so think i have seen it as soon as its started thank god.

Romey pop pops had a check up as well as she came for the ride. She is fine vet said its is possible for house mates not to get it.

I have two girls that have strange bald patches on their backs. I have tried GG products, they get Ivomec on a regular basis but it never goes away.

Its certainly got me stumped as to what the problem is.

Hiya Vicki he had it when he first came to be then it cleared up with ivomec and its now come back in the same spot. Bless him not sure why he has got it again. Should clear up soon think i have caught it early. :)
 
Hope it clears up soon Lindsay! Our vet still gives invermectin jabs - if I have to go again for mites should I question this and ask for the Xeno drops?

Mary mentioned the Xeno drops last night so i was going to mention them if my Vet suggested jabs but he said straight away that he would prescribe them. So i was really pleased as i didnt want him having injections. I'm sure they will work well as i have caught it really early. It doesnt even look sore its just a little bit bald and slightly flakey.

So pleased i check them daily. Sure pays off to be a fussy mummy doesnt it :)

Yeah my girls always have it, same spot all the time. They are both about 2-3 now and it doesnt matter what I use it doesnt go away.

Hope you manage to clear it up. I'm gonna try and see if I can clear the girls up but nothing seems to work. Their skin is fine as well so I will have to wait and see. Ive got some more shampoos coming from GG and I have one of the melts, havent tried the melt before so maybe I will give that a go.

If your 2 girls have permanent balld spots and the skin is clean,it may not be parastic might be hormonal.Ovarian cysts can change the hormonal level.Do they look plump at the sides?,and do they have hair loss over the tummy and along the sides?.Also do the present any sexual behaviour like jumping on each other?.

Both Zebra and Honey are quite plumb girlies yes, no hair loss anywhere else though. We do have a texel that has the same bald patch on her back and she does have hair loss on her tummy and a little on her sides.

None of them jump on each other though.

Is there a test for Ovarian cists?
 
A good piggy vet should be able to palpate them (i.e. squeeze their tummy gently to feel them). Smaller cysts need to be diagnosed by x-ray or ultrasound.
 
I've just discovered a bald patch on one of my pigs backs, one of the younger teddies in fact, which is just bald, no redness, soreness etc, just bald and a bit flakey. I can't believe I've now got something up with another pig! I guess trouble comes in 3s ::) I used a bit of lavender and myrrh lotion on it and think I'll get a melt for it. All the herd are due to be treated with ivermectin later this week.

Most sows can live with them untreated though their behaviour can become intolerable with mounting etc. Hair loss and weight loss can become pretty bad as well. I think the cysts can rupture too but don't have any experience with this myself.

I had a sow with cysts and a uterine tumour we chose to have spayed but despite our best efforts she didn't make it. I wouldn't put a piggy through a spay again as a result. Many people I know have had great success with hormone injections which shrink but don't completely cure them. One of my friends had her piggy practically back to normal after injections.
