Hi all, hope all is well?

Rollie has had some mushy poops since early this morning. I think it's been caused by a spur stopping him eating as much hay as he should and then eating cucumber.

Have syringe fed (every few hours) given fibreplex and pro-c prebiotic. Giving water with a dash of rehydration salts. Also given loxicom for pain for his teeth. Called our vocal emergency vet who didn't seem too concerned. We need to take him to Simon tomorrow anyway for his teeth as this little spur doesn't seem to want to budge. Will continue to syringe feed and cut out any fresh stuff.

Any further advice? He looks so glum (which I suppose he would be) and we're really worried about him.

Any advice gratefully received.

Hi!

You can offer mushed up pellets in a bowl or from a spoon as additional fibre that tastes familiar. In my experience that often goes down better, whether on their own or mixed with recovery formula.
Please don't overdo the support products; in your case you are dealing with a lack of balance of nutrients not with a tummy upset as such. Please also keep in mind that it takes about a day or two for the food to make its way through the gut twice, so you won't see an instant change.

I would however not worry too much as Rollie should be able to eat normally once his teeth have been sorted and his guts should normalise once he can eat hay again.

PS: the best way of monitoring a piggy that may be partially or fully off food is by weighing daily at the same time.

You can offer fresh grass (if necessary dry with some kitchen paper if soaking as damp grass can cause tummy upsets on an unaccustomed gut or finely shredded lettuce, which he may be able to eat.

Thanks so much for your reply. It's just so horrible seeing them like this. Never had the mushy poos before, in fact normally there's very little "output". He was taking some cc off a spoon this 8am morning. I'll see whether he'd prefer his normal nuggets mushed up. Wish we had an uncle Simon fairy godfather or an uncle Simon magic lamp we could utilise! 😂

Would the grass be OK on his dodgy tummy? I never know whether grass is classified as "veg" or more fibrous?

Hope your appointment goes well. The good old poo soup could help a bit. I wouldn’t worry too much right now if he’s seeing Simon in the morning, sure he’ll feel much better after seeing uncle Simon! :D I’d just stay off veg for tonight until your visit x

Grass is hay in its fresh state. I count it more than veg in spring and autumn when it grows fast and is rich in nutrients and more like hay in summer when it is dry.

Like I have said in my previous post, there is a difference between a basically healthy piggy not able to eat enough hay and a piggy with a tummy upset.
A dental piggy can eat grass and vet as long as it is getting enough dry fibre in easily edible form (my Dylan certainly got it while he had his toothache from hell with a developing jaw abscess). I have given you other options for ensuring that he getting plenty of fibre. If you are worried, then stay off it until you have seen Simon.

Don't just stare at the soft poos - not all are always a symptom for a tummy upset; some can just be a sign of lack of fibre which is reasily corrected but won't show asap. It also depends on the medication your boy is on.

The grass and lettuce are there to help with the hydration and to help with the overall food intake until things have normalised again with the eating. It has taken Dylan a couple of days to realise that he could eat normally again after his dental for a slightly overgrown side on his last check-up.

Thanks so much for the clarification. It's good to know as I find grass a bit of a grey area. He usually loves his fresh grass and it would certainly help with his ongoing teeth issues. Thanks again.

Thank you! Hopefully they have an emergency one available tomorrow. I'm free all day so will happily do whatever they have. He saw Kim only about 2 weeks ago but think he hasn't been able to break off the little spurs he normally gets. Poor little chap, can't imagine the pain he's in. Fingers crossed Uncle Simon or Auntie Kim can help out tomorrow. 🤞

Hi all,
Rollie went to see a uncle Simon this morning who confirmed he had a sharp sour going up into his cheek. This has been removed. He's now sat at home with Fozz eating some grass and lettuce... The first things he's eaten for himself in a couple of days. My adoration for Simon goes no bounds! Rollie still has a slightly mucky bum but understandable considering the situation. Will continue to weigh, pain relief, top up feed and fibre plex for a few more days. Thanks all for your help and advice. 😊

And now that he's had grass and it wasn't so bad, he's had some nuggets, hay and had a drink from his water bottle! 😁 Will weigh him later on and top up feed with fibre plex. Loxicom at 10pm to help him overnight. Hope that the extra food will help stabalise his guts a little more. Thanks all 😁

Grass is fine to feed! Simon always tells me to feed them whatever they will eat, even veg!
Thanks for that. Really useful to know. Mr Rolls always loses so much confidence in eating when his teeth go bad, understandable really. Once he knows that it's OK to eat, it kick starts the "normal" eating. He's a little glum this morning, think his nighttime loxicom is wearing off and his morning hasn't kicked in yet but we've given him his delicious mini cucumber and some grass to get him going, which he's having a go at. 😊
