Hi everyone *waves*

This is my 1st post here since joining a few days ago.

My 1 piggy Salt eating habits changed Tuesday he wasn't being his normal piggy self and was eating very slowly and very little, he was also doing a weird opening thing with his mouth...so I joined this forum and what I thought may be overgrown teeth seemed to be what other people were saying on here. So I took him to the vet Wednesday evening and sure enough it was, they said his teeth wern't in to bad condition but the one molar had a sharp spike and it was starting to cut his gum a little :( They kept him overnight and yesterday he went under the anesthetic to have them filed and I picked him up yesterday evening. He seems to be eating ok again still not his normal self but eating only leafy things though like celery leaves, cabbage and a little bit of lettuce. He also seems to be doing quite well with dried food.

Anyway...get to the point Nikki! Lol ... My question is has anybody else's Guinea Pig been under anesthetic and afterwards gone a bit wild? Like running round like Usain Bolt and just being very jumpy and not wanting to be touched? He does like to run around but this scared me how fast he was running round and it was making his little heart beat ten to the dozen. He seemed alot calmer this morning and was being a good little boy and letting me give him his medicene. But I was just wondering if it was a normal after effect perhaps of the anethestic?

Hope I hear back from somebody soon :) sorry for the long post, I'm like little miss chatterbox rolleyes

Hey, Welcome to the forum. See your from Wolves. There are a few of us on here!

Before i found our current vet (who performs dentals without General Anethestic) our first piggie 'Pitch' had 2 dentals done with anethestic. She recovered from the anethestic quickly and was drowsy as opposed to the running around you have mentioned.
It may have been possible that your piggie was just very stressed out after the ordeal, good news he is more like himself this morning.

It can take piggies a few days even a week or so to get back to eating noramlly after dental, it varies from piggie to piggie. Please weigh him everyday to make sure he isn't losing any weight... Has he got some painkillers such as metacam from the vet to be given at home?

Nope generally my piggies have been more sedate, is it possible though that maybe he just feels better within himself an dits getting over excited?

Thank you both for replying.

Yes I had some of the Metcam, he had some of that this morning he has to have it once a day until he I take him back for a checkup on Monday, I also have some other medicene to give him twice a day 0.2ml, can't remember the name though and I'm at work now.

What Vet do you use, if you dont mind me asking? I do think my vet is very good, but if it is less stressful for my piggy to not be put under, it would make me happier and the pigs I'm sure!

Perhaps it was he was just excited to be home and had a burst of energy from being under and drowsy, lol.

Make sure you keep an eye on his weight, because if he isnt eating enough for himself he will need to be syringe fed :) Also, see if you can get some softer greener hay(unless thats what you already have, ofc) or maybe cut some grass from the garden to encorage him to eat :)

You can also soften guinea pig pellets in boiling water and leave to cool, then pop in his cage.

(ideally you want him to be eating for himself, so anything to encorage that is good)

I'm sorry i cant help RE the vet, hopefully someone else will pop along soon and advise! :)

Thanks, I'll weigh him when I get home, they weighed him at the vets on Tuesday and he was 1.2kg. I have some hay, its not the softer greener hay as the shop didn't have any so I'll try him with that tonight and then go to my local pet shop tomorrow and buy some from there. Ive also brought some spinach today as they both love it, I just dont give it them very often as it seems to make their cage smell really quickly, you wouldn't know why would you, lol? I'm hoping giving him spinach will make him eat a bit more. Ive spoke to my boyfriend who gets home early on fridays and he's said all the cabbage has gone from their cage so he's going to put some more in, the only probably with having 2 piggys is when your not you dont kow who's eaten what do you. He was munching away at the cabbage though when I left him this morning so thats good.

I have always given my guinea pigs the mixed dried food but after reading a few things on here I'm starting to think its not a good idea and maybe I should be giving them the pellets, it wouldn't be too late to change it would it? They are both just over 3 years old.

You can wean them off their mixed food gradually - I've got 18 piggies and they all have Wagg Optimum pellets and Burgess Excel nuggets :))

For the moment, i would soften some pellets(ie buy some of these) and pop those in the cage but also offer their usual musli, then gradually change them over once your not worried about him eating :)

Yes, rougher hay is usually fine for them (and the need some kind of hay 24/7anyway) but softer might be an ideal just while hes getting better :)

Spinache probably makes the cage smell due to the calcium deposits piggies produce after eating it (thats what happens when piggies eat too much calcium) I know thats atleast what the smell is when my piggies have it :)

Sounds like your doing everything you can for him! Well done and please keep us updated :)

Gald you've got some metacam sorted as they can be in pain after having their little mouth's messed around with.
We use a vet called Rosie in Wombrook Vets, Rookery Road, Wombourne. She is fantastic. I can't recomend her highly enough.

It sounds like your little boy is doing well, as Connie and Guineapigslave have said you can change food gradually if you wish by mixing it in.

Most important thing is weighing as this will show you if he's eating. Please keep us updated. Hope Salt continues to get better.

I weighed him when I got home tonight and he is 1.125kg so hasnt lost too much, I will weigh him again tomorrow. He ate quite a bit of spinach tonight and hay, but his still definatley not right. He doesnt like me touching the top of his head between his ears (which he usually loves) do you think they could have given him a needle for the anesthetic here? Everytime I go to touch him there he runs round really madly, even when I sitting on the chair holding him (which has caused my arms and chest to be scratched quiiite a bit tonight). He was never like it before.

It also seems his little operation has made him prove he's the dominating one to Pepper again as he has been throwing a few hissys, the naughty boy!

Firstly let me welcome you Nikki, Salt and Pepper to the forum :)
Sorry to hear about your little man Salt :( WELL DONE for reading up and then recognising the signs of toofie problems!
You might like to cut his food up into strips to make it easier for eating.
Please keep us updated whee will be checking to see how little Salt is going....... and give Pepper some loves from us too XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Hi you everyone :-)

Just thought I'd give you all a quick update on my little Saltypie :D he seems alot lot bettet today, alot calmer in himself, no mad running round, lol.

The both been out in their run for the first time this year today, as its been quite warm today here in Wolverhampton, only kept them out for a short while though, still got the chill in the air hasn't it... I'm glad to say whilst they were out there Salt didnt stop eating, especially the dandelions I was giving him, he seemed a very happy piggy today, which has pleased me, he still doesn't seem ti keen on eating hard things like celery and peppers but hes getting there.

Hes back at the vets for a check up tomorrow evening so I'll let you all know how he gets on.

Thanks & speak soon, Nikki x

Ps Hi to Glynis, Velvet & Onyx :)
