Well let’s start at the beginning.
Gorgeous Pepper came into my life at the very beginning of November 2020 just before we went into the 2nd Covid lockdown. Literally the day before lockdown. So he was definitely a “panic buy”. Most people were panic buying loo paper and pasta. I was buying a piggy.
I had just lost baby Pippin, who was Percy’s friend, and I knew Percy would need a friend ASAP. I tried the local pet stores. But they would not sell a lone piggy even though I explained they would be coming to live with a friend. So I resorted to gumtree to find a baby for Percy.
It was a match made in heaven. Percy was a wonderful uncle piggy and loved Pepper from the second he met him.
Unfortunately Percy developed a bladder stone and didn’t recover from the anaesthetic. I was away on holiday when he passed and I wasn’t sure what to do for the best but in August 2022 we found a new friend for Pepper. This time it was his turn to be the big uncle.
Along came Pebble. His name came to me while I walking along the beach thinking what I should do.
Pepper had mites twice, a tooth root abscess which took months to recover from and needed 8 weeks of constant syringe feeding and two trips to Northampton to see the amazing Simon and Kim.
He used to live in the garage but once my two children moved out I had the opportunity to bring them inside. They enjoyed their own room in the house living their best lives on fleece.
In February this year he developed noisy breathing. He was at the vets within the hour. Put on ABs and pain meds. The vet wasn’t sure it was his lungs and thought it could be his heart. After 2 weeks he was back to normal. This didn’t last and his breathing got worse again. So back to the vets who said he had a tumour somewhere and he was put on long term pain meds.
On Tuesday morning he was fine and ate his veggie brekkie with Pebble and hay too. By lunchtime he was having laboured breathing again. I gave him his pain meds early and a bit more too to make him as comfortable as possible. I was hoping he would pass at home peacefully. By 4pm I was worried he would take a turn for the worst overnight so I decided to get a vet appointment for 6pm that evening to help him on his way over the bridge to Percy. I was determined that he would not suffer. I was in his room with him at 5.30 deciding what blanket to take with him to the vets when he took his last breaths. I sat with him at the end. It was so peaceful. He really did look like he was sleeping. His head was propped up on a pillow and he looked so comfy. I feel blessed that he went at home with me by his side.
Sweet dreams my sweet Peppercorn. You were such a lovely, kind piggy.
Say hi to PercyPig over the bridge.
Love mummy
