She is by far the calmest, gentle, and most loving of all 4 of my piggies. and that is a red eyed trate.

Sadly many people do whether it be the length, texture or colour of their hair or the colour of their eyes. :(

I feel those people should not have guinea pigs then as it does not matter what they look like at all.

I used to have slight fear of red eyes too but now I love my pink eyed pretties. There is nothing wrong with them and it in no way detracts from there looks. In my opinion it my be impossible to get an ugly guinea pig. Yes some people have preferences but would you rather your piggy is happy or not?

I was scared of red eyed piggies but when Buddy chose Basil I realised that the personality matters far more and in fact now I would seek out red eyed piggies for their beauty and the fact so many do dislike them.

I wouldn't tell you to get rid of little Fudge but please consider his thoughts and feeling in this. Afterall he is the one living with the choice made 24/7.

I can't believe you're still calling them rodents! I'm still smarting after loosing one of my precious girls last week, and I come across this thread..
They are so much more than 'rodents'.. they have feelings just like any other animal, and deserve 'respect'.. my girl used her last ounce of strength to lunge forward and put her head in the palm of my hand.. have you any idea how much this has upset me? And don't you dare give me a smart alec comment back, GRRRRR!

I can't understand why you would call them Rodents, I hate that term! :{

I love red eyes, so beautiful, you shouldn't base a piggie on his/her looks, each has it's own unique personality, of which all are beautiful, and in the end, it's not you that has to share a cage, it's Fudge that has to, so ultimately it should be his choice who he wants to spend the rest of his life with, right? :)

@Toffeewoffee, I adore those eyes!

Alright, I'm not sticking up for anyone or picking sides but lets not bash anyone here. Calling them rodents is her choice, not something I agree with or think is respectful, but it is her choice. She thinks I'm silly for calling mine 'ickle piggy wigs' and actually said as much but it is my choice.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, let's not get personal.

ps. this isn't directed at anyone and I'm very sorry for the loss of your piggy BonBon2010

My intention was never to bash anyone, I just really dislike the term Rodents, I don't ever see them that way, they are my babies :)

My Kizzy who has red eyes, has a personality of which some will remember Victor Meldrew (from One Foot In the Grave) lol, Kizzy is like a grumpy old man, set in his ways, and he is adorable, that makes him who he is.
And then there's Tuppence, who is like 3 year old child, loads of energy, running around, "I Want, I Want, I Want", both completely different, but I see their personalities stand out, their looks is not what makes them.

I was pretty sure that I had read somewhere that guinea pigs are now classed separately from the rest of the rodent family. So technically you could say that they aren't rodents.
What is wrong with calling them piggies?

Ok so I am probably going to get my head bitten off here and although I am not keen on piggies being called 'rodents', I don't actually mind the term. I think that some people do not like the term 'rodent' as it is associated with rats and mice who live in the sewers and stuff.

I have had rats in the past as well as gerbils, hamsters and now a degu who are all technically rodents. I don't look at my gerbil hamster and degu and think 'urgh, you're rodents' but technically that is what they are and I have no problem with calling them that.

Sorry that you lost Rumball, and Fudge is a gorgeous piggie!

I adore all colours/breeds of guinea pigs but I too am not a lover of red-eyes.....and that stems from being bitten by a red eyed bunny when I was a little girl. Everyone has their preferences, its a fact of life. Dont think people should be "bashed" because of it!

Sue, I hope that you come to a solution about your lonely Fudge. Sounds like you are doing what you can to keep him company in the meantime.

First of all this is why I set up this thread in the first place! http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?101091-Lets-see-those-pink-eyes!-)
Secondly although I always call my pigs by their names this is not my issue I just don't want your Fudge to be denied a lifelong companion just because you think they have pink eyes? Doesn't make sense they come first no one else. So try to give a pink eyed piggy a chance! they really do have fantastic personalities and are hard to re home all because of the stereotype! I am sorry for the loss of Rumball as I have been following your threads and know you have had problems with him for a while.

Toffeewoffee, your piggy is soooooo lovely! :) xxxxx

I feel sorry for all those poor little red eyed piggies. I have three myself and have no idea why people gets creeped out by them. Each to their own of course.
Toffeewoffee your girl is gorgeous!

In regards to the rodent thing, I do find it a little weird. I just call them my piggies! Rodent sounds so.... clinical and textbooky. Personally, my piggies are more like my children so I find it a very weird term to use.

ANYWAY - I'm sorry you lost your Rumball and I really do think that Fudge is a gorgeous little one.

Blah, drama. I didn't say I wouldn't have an ugly or red eyed rodent, I just hope I don't end up with one. I'm sure I can find it in my heart to learn to love it if Fudge does want one as a friend. Afterall, some really ugly creatures are pretty boss! I dead set dig naked mole rats but other people always say how horrible they are. Mind you, I don't care what they think.

Personally, I love red/pink eyed piggies...but then again, I love ALL piggies regardless.

I'd say a good half of my group have red eyes, I like to think of them as jewels and piggies are blessed to have them. ALL my red eyed piggies are affectionate, gentle and laid back.

It's a matter of choice, but I think you're missing out!

Also, I don't think it is possible to have an 'ugly' guinea pig, they are all beautiful in their own way and worthy of a loving home.

P.S. My Piccolo (R.I.P) was the most beautiful guinea pig, both in looks and personality and he had gorgeous pink eyes. Anyone would have been very lucky to have adopted him so I feel so grateful that he was with my family, even if it wasn't for long enough.

You shouldn't have to 'learn to love' an animal just because you think it's ugly. You should love them regardless. I really think that some people shouldn't be allowed animals...

Well you might be in luck there cos I’m finding it hard to get hold of a new rescued rodent, at this rate I’m gonna have to get a pet shop one but I don’t wanna do that. It’s against my morals.

BTW ain’t nowt wrong with learning to love. When I got my rodents I weren’t all that keen on them at all. My heart was still in love with my dead beautiful bunny rabbit Henry, I just got the rodents to keep me company and to give them a good home with the thought that they’ll grow on me later and they sure did. Especially the black one. We were close. & he didn’t love me straight away, it took me about a year and a half before I could catch the damn things with ease. They’d come and sniff my fingers but no way would either be up for being handled without a fight but in the last year I could remove the black one’s cardboard box and stroke him in his bed and he’d let me pick him up without a fight. Even the fudge coloured one doesn’t always bolt straight away when I lift his box up for catching. I can often get a few strokes in before he tries to escape. Mind you the black one liked being petted by me but the fudge coloured one has a totally different personality. He s*ddin’ well bit me last night. I don’t think he wants to be petted, I think he wants a friend, he’s so miserable now and is so very inactive.

You know what, personally I think I’d want a real ugly rodent that’s good with people than another pretty rodent that doesn’t want to be petted. I miss Rumball.

He was pretty ugly himself but he was such a nice thing.

Maybe fudge thinks your ugly? Thats why he bit you and doesn't really want anything to do with you?

Edit: And i think both of your piggies are and were beautiful! As are all piggies.

Why are you finding it so hard to find a rescue piggy? There are 1000's needing new homes in rescues all over the country? Or do i remember you saying you wouldn't be willing to travel any distance to find the fudge coloured rodent a new friend?

I’ve asked the place where I got the rodents and Henry from and she’s only got paired boars at the mo. She used to have heaps more animals but there does seem to be less and less each time I go there and I’ve asked Milhaven cos that’s nearby with tonnes of them but not had a response yet but I was figuring she might not want to give me one cos people here seem very negative about how I treat rodents and don’t seem to like me much. She might be part of the nark brigade or influenced by them. I dunno. I guess I’ll find out later. Do you think she should give me one?

I dont think members on here (purely going by responses on your threads, obviously i cannot talk for everyone, just myself, anyway back to the point) have no respect for you, i always get the feeling you come on here to wind us up, ok, it is up to you what you call your animals but you know how upset and annoying it is for us for you to keep referring to them as rodents, - i am sure they have names which you could refer to them by, but you seem to carry on calling them rodents - as if trying to wind us up.

You have lately developed a liking for (on a guinea pig forum with lots of loving caring members) as referring to g-pigs as ugly, which is very upsetting.

You seem to ask advise then come back with smart arse sarcastic answers which no-one appreciates.

When you told us the rumble had been pts - you just said well he is dead now, and he snuffed it - not the sort of response from someone who claims to love and care for their animals. When you had taken him to the vets you referred to is as another 30 quid down the swanny - never a good line to use on a forum such as this!

I could go on, but it will probably inspire you to carry on, i think we could move forward if you just changed the way in which you write things and talk to people, but i cant ask or make you change. It is up to you.

I am sure you do care for your animals, but the way you come across does suggest otherwise. If you really felt people on this forum hated you then you wouldn't keep coming back would you? Which again makes me think you just like to wind us up!

I shall be catching up with emails shortly, as you stated I have many poorly piggies at the moment and am extremely busy. I am not influenced by other people at all, I am very capable of making my own decisions and shall respond with my own opinions. ALL decisions that I make are not taken lightly and I will only allow my piggies to be rehomed to homes which I am 100% happy with.
