Hi, i am new on this site, i have joined because i want to find out more about guinea pigs. I have a pair ( now only one..........) of 3 and half years old boys.
I have been in hollyday for 2 weeks, and i left my boys to someone witch looks after the guinea pigs for long time and for many other guinea pigs owners. One day before to pick them up, i have received a message from the person, that one of my boys has an upset tummy. I said to her to take him to the vet.Next day, she text me that my boy died.......i really dont know what happend, maybe because they change the habitat, or the usual food.....i really dont know. What i know is that i'm feel empty, and i dont know what to do with the other boy, should i buy another one, or should i leave it alone...?

I'm very sorry for your loss, unfortunately Guinea Pigs can go downhill very quickly, and we often question what happened. We would not be able to tell you what killed your Guinea Pig but the best advice you gave was go to the Vet. What any Good Owner would do, I'm sorry your boy couldn't be saved.

Your remaining boy, is probably a bit lost to being on his own now, where are you in the Uk?

I would advise taking your boy boar dating at a rescue and allowing him to choose his new companion.

Oh so sorry to hear about your piggy - they do leave a huge emotional hole when they go :( RIP little one :(

I agree with flintstones about taking your remaining piggy along to a rescue to find him a new male pal

xx

Thanks guys for your answers. I live in Basildon, Essex. How can i find a rescue....? i was looking on internet, but i cannot find. What about if i will buy a young friend ? he will accept him ?

Thanks Bailey, i will call them tomorow, maybe they can help me. Is so painfull to see the other one laying alone. Before i use to have lot of noise from them, now is so quiet......

Hello and welcome to the forum :)
I'm really sorry to hear about your piggie 8...8...8...
I hope your remaining piggie can choose a new friend so they can happily chat away to each other :)

Hi all. I have tried couple of rescue but they have nothing available. If i find for him a girlfriend, will be a problem to be compatible ? Also, if she give birth, how many usualy will be ?

Please don't consider getting him a girlfriend unless you neuter him first and leave it 6 weeks before pairing them up.
Pregnancy & labour can be very dangerous for sows, and contrary to your findings there are many rescues in the UK full to bursting with piggies who need new forever homes.

Please have a read of this http://www.cavyspirit.com/breeding.htm

The forum is rescue friendly and doesn't advocate intentional breeding.

Hello, from a rescues point of view, please do not get him a girlfriend unless you are considering getting him neutered.
Neutering has to be done by a guinea pig savy vet (a locl rescue can usually recommend one to you) and will still have to be kept seperate from a girl from a good few weeks after. He then would be able to be introduced to her.
Please dont consider getting him a girlfriend and breeding this isnt a good idea. This is why:
1- With no experience in breeding you could come meet many many problems, endangering the life of both the girl and boy
2- the girl will be far too young from a pet shop
3- They cant live together all their lives or the girl will have back to back pregnancies which is neither humane or a responsible thing to do.

The very best thing you consider is either:
Neuter the boy and get him a girlfriend
or take him long to a rescue to get him a boy friend. they may not hve anything t the time but I am sure a rescue close by will have something as I know we always have single boys.

If you need any advise you can always email me [email protected]

Please really consider what is best for your piggie and any new piggie you may get. :) good Luck :)

Hi! I am sorry for your loss and about your problems in finding your boy a new friend. You can always try to pair him up with a young boar; the age difference will help to stabilise the relationship. If you can find a place where you can take your boy for boar dating, that would be even better!

No proper rescue will rehome girls with an unneutered boar. Please consider that if you get your boy a girl, you will have to separate them again well before a girl gives birth and have him neutered anyway, or you will wade in inbred babies much quicker than you think possible - sows come into season again within hours of giving birth and babies start as early as 3 weeks (boys) and 4 weeks old (girl) with being able to reproduce. Sadly, the risk of something going wrong in a pregnancy is very high - and very real. Just have a look through our pregnancy section!
This is what the best medical website for guinea pigs has to say: http://www.guinealynx.info/breeding.html

However, there is nothing to say that your boy cannot live with a girl or two after he's been neutered and had his 4-6 weeks post op wait. I would recommend looking for an experienced vet in that case.

Advice

Yeah please dont get a girl guinea pig. I'm sorry for your loss, I lost one of my little piggies when she was only 2. We dont even know what killed her but her pal was alright, and we got another guinea pig for her. Try guinea pig rehome or the rspca. Guinea pig rehome will show you a list of rescue centres near you. Also if you get a guinea pig make sure you take your current one with you or you might end up having to seperate them cause they fight.
Good luck.:)) :)) :)) :))
