Three of my four boys have Cheilitis, I took them all to the vet and after looking through a few books (?) she told me this is what they have but said there was no medication she could prescribe.

Ive been using warm salt water and a cotton bud but I wish I could do something more. Ive heard you shouldn't remove any of the scabs?

Does anyone have any advise? :(

My heart pig Nigel gets this when he is having a bad period (he has ups and downs). The advice I have been given is to use a cotton bud to apply a Hibiscrub solution and then Daktarin oral gel once the hibiscrub has dried. I do this twice a day and it seems to clear it up. His is only mild though.

You need a new vet by the sounds of it, there is treatment for this. If a book comes out you should run a million miles in the opposite direction. It is a bacteria infection. He needs to go on antibios and have a cream to apply to the sores. I also love gorgeous guineas too which I use once a day along with the cream.

Is it caused by stress?

They're all okay in the sense they're eating well and running around.

How long does it take to clear up roughly? The vet told me it can take months.

It can be caused by a number of things, sharp items that have cut the lip (bedding, hay etc), dental problems are known to cause it as well as lack of vit c. Once they've had it they can be prone to it comeing back through times of stress or a weakened immune system. I've had some in recently with it. One had only a tiny little dot of a scab in 2 places, was cleared within days, other had ones that were worse, took a few weeks to clear but came back, however it's only taken a week and it's nearly gone again. If you don't treat it, it will just get worse, it wouldn't improve on it's own.

I was told it was a virus and nothing will work to fight it. I new there must be something I could do.

Is there anything else I could try? What have you guys used? Ive taken note of the two things mentioned above.

I'm really nervous about using something that isn't specific to animals.

Do you have any other vets near you that you could take them to for a second opinion?

You really need to see a different vet. Where abouts in Cambs are you? Not sure if he's still there but there used to be an excellent vet based at a practice in Kirton.

I have found that the treatment depends on how bad it is.

I'm in Huntingdon, about 20 miles above cambridge.

Do you know anymore details about the vet in Kirton?

I'm not very familiar with the area, we haven't been here very long.

Could you be as specific as possible :)

Give Vedra a call or text tomorrow & get an appointment :

http://www.britishassociationofrodentologists.co.uk/CCT.html

If you tell her that you aren't a member but need an appointment & what the vet said was wrong with your piggies then hopefully she will see all of them, or at least put you onto a vet that knows their stuff :)

She's based at Wyton, barely 15 minutes from you rolleyes

Membership costs £30 a year for any amount of piggies & she will worm, trim toenails & do free dentals in that price.

Personally I wouldn't, it will be painful for them & leave an open wound vulnerable to infection. I would await an expert's view! Good luck tomorrow :)

i know in humans chelitis can be fungal based. i've had it myself-the corners of my mouth split and a infection (fungal based) develops in the cracks. my doctor gave me an antifungal cream; clears right up! hth

Sorry, not revisited the thread since. There is only one vets in Kirton, it's been about 7 years now since i left the area and not sure if he's still there, but the vet was called either Nigel or Neil. Excellent vet, saved many a pig for me.

If it is was it this practice?

Would help others & myself if it is :)

Ive got an appointment at 6pm today with Vedra :)

I'll let you know how I get on.

Good luck! Are your piggies kept on or have had contact with wood shavings? Vedra is very allergic to them, so it's best to tell her when you get there, really they would need to be bathed first :)

If not, just take them in a carrier or box with just plain newspaper under or blanket/fleece or towel.

Didn't know they had a website, thats the one, and Nigel is still there. He sorted out my largest rescue case including a pig with an eye hanging out. Also diagnosed my dog after 3 other vets wrote him off, got him sorted and gave him 4 extra years of a happy life. Wonderful vet imo.

Thanks, I have booked marked their page :)

I have just rang them & they don't do conscious dentals on piggies, or x-rays but if you recommend him then that's very useful for the future :)

I don't know who you talked to but they did x-rays when I used them, infact Lily needed an x-ray before her eye was taken out due to the severity of the damage (she'd had battery acid poured over her face). As for dentals, I couldn't comment, I didn't ever hav ea dental done there, they were done with another vet practice which has now exchanged hands as the guy has retired. Things may have changed there, because, as I said it's been a good 7 years and alot can change in that time. Would be sad if it has because Nigel was a very good vet.

Just took them to see Vedra, she was lovely :)

She took Peanut who had the worst case and removed the scabs and put some iodine on the sore.

I've left all 4 with her so she can do this everyday and I can collect them on friday.

I miss them already and I feel horrible, she said it was probably the apples I've been feeding them. I was careful not to give them too much. 8...

I really hope they get better soon, thank you by the way for that vets. Ive book marked them incase i ever need them if my vets are crap with small animals.

I didnt recommend the vets but I've heard they're very good :) If not I'd say go and see Vedra, she really knew her stuff and I'm comfortable leaving my boys with her.

I'll let you know how they got on when they come home at the end of the week :)

That's great, I am sure she will take good care of them, she has air conditioned 5 star boarding there too if ever you need a holiday :)

I forgot to say she is allergic to wood shavings, in case yours are kept on them rolleyes

that sounds amazing :)) they wouldnt want to come home haha

I read a sign when I was waiting to be seen, she wrapped them in a blanket :)

Thank you so much for recommending her, I really really appreciate it. Do you live nearby?
