Hi all, my name is Riley and I am new to this website. My two guinea pigs, Lou and Curtis, have been with me for over a year now and have gotten me through the struggles of college and growing into an adult. A few days ago, Lou started to display signs of illness by whining while pooing and peeing, later showing blood in his urine. After bringing him to a few veterinarian appointments the doctor explained that the only remedy to the situation would be an operation which would cost a lot of money. I started a gofundme account because I love this guinea pig so much and he is suffering terribly and might not make it. This act is completely out of character but done out of such a deep desperation to do anything in my power to save my little guy because his life means something. I'm sorry if my use of this website offends anyone and know that my intentions are good. Please let me know if you are interested in donating and I will send you a link in a private message. Thanks for the attention, all, and a happy new year.

Have they said what is wrong with him? Have they put him on antibiotics? Is your vet experienced with Guinea pigs?

He has a kidney stone and he has been antibiotics for the past few days as well but the veterinarian (who specializes in "exotic" animals) did say that surgery would be the only thing to nullify the issue.

Is it a kidney stone or a bladder stone? a small kidney stone may be flushed out by syringing a small amount of fizzy water daily (using a 1ml syringe 1 or 2 syringes of water ) - my Bumble had one and my exotics specialist told me to try this 9he was also put on a course of septrin ,metacam for pain relief and a low calcium pellet and diet.

It is a kidney stone, not sure what size it would be considered, but I would be more than willing to try this. So about 2 ml of tonic water?

Ehhhh... I already went ahead and fed him tonic water. I hope that doesn't negatively affect him. Tomorrow I shall procure some sparkling water... :(

Okay well hopefully the small amount that you have given will have no impact but just keep watch.

You just want plain old water that is fizzy basically.

Sorry to hear your piggie is not well.

Giving extra fluids may or may not be able to help 'flush' some of the renolith (kidney stone) out a little but this type of treatment is often unsuccessful. What surgery is your vet suggesting doing? Is he wanting to remove the effected kidney? This can be done providing the other kidney is working ok.

Kidney stones are very painful, is your little one on a good amount of pain relief. Is he eating ok? I would consider the surgery carefully and have a chat to your vet about long term outcomes of the surgery, pain relief and longterm treatment without surgery.

My veterinarian did not go into detail about what type of surgery and I had just assumed it would be to remove the stone itself. He said that if we ended up going with that option, he would want my little guy to feel a bit better first to make him more stable for anesthesia, but I'm not sure if he'll be feeling better with just the antibiotics that he was put on. He is eating and drinking but not as much as usual. The veterinarian said "he may start to feel better or it could become much worse." It did not seem like a very helpful conversation.

Hi, sounds like bladder stones! , my mr woo is going through this horrible illness too, I took him to the vets today and he's on botics and painkiller, the X-ray showed a big bladder stone! :(
I can totally understand how you feel my piggies have been with me,and helping me through sickness, disabilities,& music studies, there just there when u need them, never judge just happy to see there human,
A lot of vets do have this charity thing where if you really can't pay they pay for the treatment, but ask you for a donation towards the cost of treatments, also a lot of vets will make out a payment plan so you can pay in instalments if you can't afford the full amount all at once, ask your vets about this,as most vets would rather treat a sick animal 1st & then sort the bill out afterwards....
I hope your special piggy gets the treatments needed and soon gets better :)

PS, meant to say a lot do have this charity thing but not all do, but a lot will make out a payment plan......I can't remember the name of the charity, but someone else might know it, and your vets will deffo know about it if there surgery has it...

if you're from the UK the PDSA may be able to help you towards costs of treatment some benefits will let you qualify for financial help.
good luck & healing vibes for your little furry. xx
