Hi Everyone,

I just recently got my guinea pig Odie. Problem is, he wont eat his fruits or vegetables. I've offered him varieties, from apples and oranges to celery and carrots. I think he might be nibbling on them sometimes, but I'm worried he might not be getting the right amount of vitamin C :-\ Any Advice?

Try some leafier veg. Kale, parsely, cabbage, piggies love them.
If you've alredy tried them, with no joy, try offering a scrap of lettuce. If he eats that, he'll probably eat parsely too. Then you can work from there.
Good luck O0

Just try small quantities at a time and keep offering it to him everyday, once he knows it tastes nice he will be begging for more ;)

The other thing you need to consider is if you have not had him long, he is still nervous. Try some different veg as suggested above but put it in and then leave him to eat it without you standing there. They do take time to settle in and start trusting their new human friend :)

Have you tried Cucumber?its an all time fovourite with my lot

Great Minds Sokel, I was going to suggest cucumber! My two girls would crawl over broken glass to get to a piece of cucumber, that and sweet small orange peppers.

Thanks so much! I've tryed cucumber but I'm gonna try Kale, parsely, cabbage, and Peppers. He seems to be eating a little more vegtables each day. He probably isnt getting 3 whole servings but I'm sure he's getting enough for now =D Thanks everyone

mine tried curly kale for the first time today (half price at Tesco!), and LOVED it! :smitten: :smitten: They also tried strawberries this morning, which were a hit with the girls but the boys weren't bothered! ::) Broccoli, cabbage and corn on the cob are their favourites. :) Good luck!

i found that dibdab just didnt know what fruit and veg was when she came from the pet shop.... they dont really get fresh foods there in a sufficient quantity!

the first thing i actually got her to eat was a carrot slice extremely thinly.... about 10 minutes later she started to poopsie and i lifted about 60 little poos, poor critter was bunged up!

eventually your piggie will get used to the food and then u wont be able to carry them to the cage in a wheelbarrow!

I had a similar experience with my two. They had been living with 3 RABBITS and 10 other cavies, so not surprisingly, they hadn't actually got to eat fresh food before.
Burgess Super Guinea Excel has guaranteed vit C levels in every pack so that's a good pellet to offer at least in the short term (that's what I feed my piggies). Most piggies seem to have a sweet tooth so apart from offering the beloved cucumber you could try tempting him with things like strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, grapes etc along with some sensible lower sugar veggies. Depending on your relationship with him you could try very gently rubbing a little juice from the fruit on his lips or chin when you cuddle him and then leave the rest on your lap and in his food bowl or veggie stick and see if he's inspired.
When I first got my girls they wouldn't eat in front of me so I spied on them in the dark peering through the bookcase! Ha! They scoffed it all down as soon as they thought I'd gone. Sooo funny!
