This afternoon, my heart was broken. I had to help my darling Zac on his way to Rainbow Bridge.

He was an old man at somewhere between 14 and 15 and had been suffering with heart failure for the last 18 months or so. Our vet did a fantastic job in keeping him with us for so long with all concoction of pills, but sadly in the last week or so we realised that the tablets just weren't working like they were before and he was beginning to struggle for breath.

He was never an ounce of trouble although did eat many things a labrador shouldn't in his time - namely a huge box of Thornton's chocolates including most of the box, a punnet of raw mushrooms and a jellyfish!

He was such a good dog and had some odd fears, mostly the hoover and toys that talked. I wish I had known him as a puppy, but treasure the last 13 years or so we shared. His favourite thing was to run on the beach, or sleep on my brother's bed, although he always hated the laminate flooring in the bedroom.

I miss him so much and am sure our little beagle misses him too. She taught him some bad habits in his last year!

Rest well darling Zac, we all miss you terribly and love you deeply. The house will be so quiet without your big bark

Oh gosh, i've only just mastered how to read the piggy bridge stories but i just cannot bear to read about our dogs :0 i lost my chippie last month after 13 years and my it was so hard. I'm sure along with many other people on this forum i completely understand how you must be feeling. I still think about Chippie every day and have his picture by my bedside, even now it sometimes hits me that he has actually gone and i will never see his beautiful face again 8...

Zac is a gorgeous boy and he had a wonderful life with you, it sounds like you have wonderful memories of him to cherish, rest in peace lovely boy, go find my chippie and have fun at the bridge (although watch out he didn't always like other dogs :))!) Big hugs to you xxxxxxxxxxx

RIP Zac. May you find your strength through this unbearable time. *hugs* :(

I'm very sorry to hear about Zac :( I lost my black labrador ***** back in November 2008 and even now I think of her a lot. Sleep well Zac xx

So very sorry to hear this - Zac was lovely.
Reminds me of my resue black lab, Ben. He was the most docile and dopey pooch ever and I loved him sooo much - we nicknamed him Scooby. So protective of my young son at the time, would follow him toddling around the garden and bark at anyone almost like he was warning them to keep away from his little charge :) They were inseperable.
I'd often peep through the window when coming home and there was Ben sprawled out on the sofa but he would miraculously be on the rug when I walked in, crafty old devil :))
They leave so many cherished memories and broken hearts behind :0
Hugs to you hun x

Thankyou everyone for your warm thoughts, I really do appreciate your wishes. I miss him so much...

Every one of the posts has made me cry all over again though!

So sad; I love my black Lab to pieces and know how you must feel. Bob my German shepherd/malamute lived to be over 18, and Thomas my cat lived to be over 20, so I know it is very hard to have someone in your family that long and then to lose them, especially if you are the one who has to decide when that final journey shall be. God bless you all, and maybe my Bob was there to welcome your Zac.

I'm so sorry, Zac was adorable. Sweet dreams beautiful boy.

Big hugs to you............I'm so sorry for your loss. Beautiful Zac rest in peace gorgeous one.
