Sadly my piggy, Mother passed away in my arms on Monday, August 25th at 11.30pm.

This was her life:-

Mother in a regal pose in 2012:-

She was my first piggy & I got her on June 15th 2011. I bought her from a pet shop (before I knew better) as a companion for my wife’s piggy, Lisa. We called her Maggie but 61 days after getting her she had a baby boy & girl so she got the name Mother that stuck ever since. We originally thought she’d been caught by her brother in the pet shop but discovered about a week after she gave birth that Lisa was a boar. He’d been with her right throughout the pregnancy, birth & the week after but had to be separated when we discovered the truth. He & the baby boy were re-homed & we kept Mother & her daughter Madam.

Mother with her daughter, Madam in 2011:-

We extended our group to 4 piggies when we got Minky & Mousey about 3 weeks after the babies were born & the 4 were eventually bonded a week or two later. Mother then broke her back leg at the beginning of October the same year. It healed quickly & she was fully mobile within 3 weeks & until recently when her vet mentioned it when she had an x-ray, it had healed that well so that we couldn't remember if it was left or right. We're not certain how it happened but we'd bought a new cage with a ramp & suspected this so I made it safe by adding sides to it & there was never any recurrence.

Mother with Mousey & Minky shortly after Madam passed away in 2013:-

The 4 lived as a group until February Saturday, February 16th when her daughter, Madam passed away aged just 18 months. A few weeks later we adopted Minnie from Bekki but the bonding didn’t go too well so we adopted Mitch as her hus-boar from Bunny Burrows. We tried these on the lawn with the 3 girls & Mitch seemed to have a steadying influence so we took the plunge & put them all in the run together & they were fine. We then adopted a lovely boy called Rex who was bonded with Minnie & Minky. Mother & Mousey stayed with Mitch.

Mother with Mitch, Minky, Minnie & Mousey in 2013:-

The 5 got on real well until trajedy struck again on Tuesday, January 28th this year when Mousey passed away a week after an operation to remove an abscess. We had just adopted 2 Abi girls called Rhubarb & Custard so we had to change round the groups so Minnie & Minky moved back in happily with Mother & Mitch. The 2 new girls were bonded with Rex. In June I adopted 3 5-year-old girls who were going to be split up & re-homed because owner was emigrating. We tried all 8 girls on the lawn & these got on very well with Mother & Mitch that we moved them straight in the indoor run where they were instantly a happy group. The other 5 took a little longer but they were also living happy together 5 days later.

The final picture I took of mother on August 8th 2014 with Mitch, Pepper, Peach & Pixie:-

During her life Mother was the most outgoing piggy I had. She was very confident & always the first to greet me on a morning or when I came back in after a few hours absence. When they went out on the lawn as much as the weather permitted she was always the first out of the carrier onto the grass & when it was time to come back in, she would lead them back into the carrier. If any of them lagged behind she would herd them in like a sheep dog.

Her passing has left a big hole in my heart that will take a long time to fill (if ever!). I only hope she has found her way over the rainbow bridge & is with her daughter Madam & friend Mousey. R.I.P. my lovely little girl!

Ahh, it is lovely to hear about piggies lives. Your group read a bit like my herd of girls I kept over the last 20 years. Although we love them all, certain personalities leave a impression in our hearts!

So sorry to hear of your loss Stewy. Mother sounds very much like our wonderful Martha, who we lost a year ago yesterday. She was the matriarch of our little clan of six. She was one of the first pair we bought. But we couldn't stop at two! She was our special lady, as Mother has been for you and it sounds like she had an extremely happy and full life with you. Big hugs to you and your herd. Popcorn forever in fields of gold Mother. Xx
