I would definately report the vet and the treatment your piggies were given was for mites and not lice (as everyone else has said).

I have to agree that your vets bills are extortionate and injections are extremely painful for the piggies.

Two of my boys had mites a few years ago and the full treatment for them both came in at under £50 it may be more now but to this date consultation fees stand at £8.50 per visit not per pet and he would only charge this for the first visit not follow on trips for treatment.
It might be worth having a look for another surgery in your area.

That said hope your piggies are pest free soon and as happy as ever

its just they're right opposit our flat and we wanted help quickly. we saw the bugs, put pheobe down then went straight out! from seeing the bugs to asking at the vets what we could do, i think it was only 5minutes. our vetinary surgery says that this particular vets have experience in guinea pigs too. next time we'll go further afield, we were just so worried

Just caught up on this thread and I have to admit that I was shocked at the £300 quoted! rolleyes

As has been said above, lice i.e. running lice that you can see moving around are basically like head lice in humans. Treatable by shampooing, although on either a weekly or fortnightly basis, for a while because the shampoo will only kill the lice and not the eggs. Hence, the eggs hatch and the cycle starts again.
Hay mites can be treated in the same way. They just live on the hair shafts and don't, to my knowledge, cause any itching or major problems.
But mites than burrow into the skin or cause skin problems are a different thing and might need injections to help the condition.

I hope everyone's comments have helped and all works out ok xx

It was £15 per injection, so £15*4=£60 then £60*3=£180 plus consultations x

hi just wanted to say when my gizmo had ringworm the vets wanted to either charge me 70 pounds for a box of tablets or 50 pounds to take him in clip where he had it and shampoo him thrn sell me the shampoo for 16 pounds as well as on top of paying for his jabs for mites .So i contacted chrissie from gorgoues guineas for his ring worm and she recommened some shampoo and lotion which cost me about 13 pounds for both and worked a treat i think your vet is taking you for a ride defo check out gg i cant recommend their products enough.

i emailed her earlier!
also, i didnt know there was more than one type of spot on for guinea pigs!

hopefully i'll hear from her soon, but i guess i wont until monday due to the fact its the weekend

I replied to this but it's gone awol. My boys had a spot on type treatment he vet gave me - they had a dose, then 2nd does 2 weeks later, 3rd does a further 2 weeks later. It cost me 34 pounds which included 8 pouns for trimming their nails. I hope the girls feel better soon x

WOAH, good job a vet hadn't offered that advice to me, I would've reported them to whoever!...seriously!...lice are no big deal, sure they are itchy and not nice for the pigs, but they are common, and pigs won't die from them.

Its a usual misunderstanding about what are lice and what are mites, as some people call them the same names, but a vet should really know what they're talking about. I think some people have already said, lice you can see, mites you cannot.

Mites are the potentially dangerous ones, as they can cause intense pain and irritation.
Lice just need exactly what you're doing, which is ordering shampoo/treatments from GG. As long as you follow the instructions from GG you should get rid of them. I gave my pigs a clean hutch and did scrub their toys, but theres hardly any point as the lice only survive 4 hours once off the pigs body.

Good luck.

hello everyone, Chrissy emailed me some useful info at 9.24am and I've just paid for my first gg order! i'm getting lice'n'easy plus their foot cream and some other bits and pieces. all four of my girls have a habit of biting their paws, so i'm going to try the foot cream to sooth it a bit.

Thanks again everyone! Will keep you updated

I went back today for the second appointment with the vet and he confirmed the guinea pigs had Lice AND Mites.. Poor little things. He said the mites were caught early though and the Lice are pretty much all gone so carry on with our powder treatment from gorgeous guineas. They had their second injections and they all screamed like crazy, I went to reception to pay and made the joke,"you think they're quiet now, you should've heard them in the vet's room!" the replied "we did!" OOPS! the shame! x

hahaha. aw poor little things. It's good that it's all been caught early and that they are getting better.
x

HI Claire i do not know why you piggies are having injections, mine had lice recently and i just got GG lice and easy shampoo and followed the instructions and now all gone.

it shouldnt be costnig you all that money, like others have advised on here.

even with the mites? it wasn't that expensive today cxxx

ah i didnt see the bit about mites until later

i think they will need injections for this. some people use drops though which i would go for first. actually my vet did tell me that the drops mine once had did mites too. invermectin i do belieive does mites.

iv ordered some spot on and have plenty or lice powder and shampoo now. i feel so guilty that they got both,i really do clean them out pretty often and give them plenty of veggies! x

its not your fault. they got it from that hay we were talkign about probably! you should have told your boyfriend to throw it away and start anew!

Have you got your dust free hay yet?

not yet. but he's working away now so I'm going to order it later this week,so it'll be here whilst he's away! {:|{:|

Only just caught up with this, my you have had a time of it!
To be honest, I think your vet treated them for mites as a "precaution" as how he could have known they had mites is beyond me! They would have been itching from the lice! Also, he had no need to treat them with painful injections as topical ivermectin works just as well except perhaps if the infestation is very severe.

I feel very lucky to have a good vet :{

you know me, sneeky! Ruby's also sneeky, she managed to cut all Bethany's hair off last night and destroy the evidence! The vet was like, where's Bethany? This isn't Bethany?! I said, yes it is, Ruby gave her a hair cut last night rolleyes I'll have to take some photos later, she looks so different!
