Hello cavy lovers, my first post

My 3 1/2 year old boar Fugly had a visit to the Vet today for a lump on his side which has grown really fast over the last 6 weeks.
The lump had been there since the first few months of his life and had stayed half the size of a pea for over 3 years.

now it is 2cm across.
His father Floyd had the same thing, but on his face, and after 3 years of age, it grew rapidly, and he was operated on, but the lump had grown into his facial muscles, and they were damaged during its' removal.
he passed away 7 days after his operation, 2 years ago.

So with Fugly, I am having a massive panic!
He goes in for the OP tomorrow morning, I haven't got anyone I can talk to about it, as most people don't understand may absolute love for a guinea pig.
Fugly's lump appears to be completely dermal, and not attaching to any muscles or internal bits.
So here's hoping the op will be smooth, and he recovers well.
any advice, tips etc much appreciated

Hi there and GOOD LUCK with the op for little Fugly x)
We'll all have our paws crossed for the little guy, please let us know how he goes :)
Welcome to TGPF you'll find this a very friendly place, and would you believe we also have another member who's piggie is called Fugly x)
I'm just across the pond from you in OZ, so hi there Kiwi from an Aussie :):)
Very very sorry to hear about Floyd and his lump, no wonder you're so stressed out :{
MEGA HEALING WHEEEEEEEKS FOR FUGLY from myself, Velvet and Onyx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Good luck Fugly! My pooch had the same thing on his leg, the lump was there a while but then grew fast and it attached to his vessels by the time I had it seen to, fingers crossed he is ok now but as you say, if it doesn't seem attached to anything then you have it in good time. :)

thank you both so much for the messages.

We are back at home now, and the operation was a success.
They removed both lumps about 6 hours ago, and he has just eaten some grass, and drank heaps of water, so looking good so far.

the small lump under his chin was just a sebaceous gland, but the other one on his side was a pretty nasty cell packed lump that was necrotic in the centre. Confirmed it was just isolated to his dermal layer too, so thankful there, just removed before it got too far on.

They have given him some 'Deprim' suspension, antibiotics to take 1.2ml 2times a day for 3 days.
they didn't have any pro-biotic to give me for him, having never had it requested before, so not in stock.
I might just crush up a healthy pooh in his water.

he's got a couple of big long wounds, one with internal stitches, and the other under his chin with 5 external.

Thats wonderful news I hope he recovers quickly :)

I've just seen this post! My Pheobe had a lump from under her armpit removed last friday. she's doing really well, she had her 5 day check yesterday and having her 10 day check on monday. Just waiting for news on what the lump was. Good luck to the very handsome Fugly! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Best wishes on a good and quick recovery for Fugly!

I am pleased his surgery went well; fingers crossed he fully recovers very quickly too!

Can you just confirm the dose of Deprim, please? 1.2ml twice daily is a very high dose.
Deprim contains Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim - so it is basically another form of Septrin. The usual dose of Septrin would be around 0.5ml twice daily.

yes, 1.2ml twice a day
he is 1.2kg

looked again, and the deprim is in 100ml suspension.

its now two days post op, and he is doing really well, eating voraciously.
But, he seems to have lost bladder control.
he continually pees on himself, and it just dribbles out .
I had to end up goving him a #2 all around his rump, because it was always wet and smelly.

Here is Fugly after his op with his wounds.

Sending my best wishes to Fugly for a spedy recovery. One of my piggies had a large incision down his abdomen after a bladder op. The whole of his belly was bare. It was amazing how quickly the incision healed and the hair grew back.

just an update, Fugly got his stitches out on monday, and he is doing really well now, after developing a UTI and having his antibiotics course extended for another week.

SOOO stoked!

I've just been catching up on this as I haven't been around for a few weeks. I'm so pleased to read that he is doing well, what a brave little man and fabulous mummy he's got. Has put a teary smile on my face :-) Speedy recovery Fugly!
