Hi

This morning, I noticed my piggy, Amiee, half shutting one of her eyes..on closer inspection it seems to be weeping and shrunken compared to her good eye (pic compared) ... will call the vets tomorrow ..but bit worried ...

Hi!

Please see a vet as soon as you can. It looks like painful injury that is ulcerating (the gunk is the sign of an infection).

The sooner you can treat her with prescription-only antibiotic eyedrops, the quicker and easier the eye will heal. Eye injuries can unfortunately deteriorate very quickly, but they do also heal pretty straight forward if you catch any infection before it can penetrate into the eyeball. Your vet will check the damage with a special dye under UV light and treat accordingly. It is not usually fully visible for the naked eye. ;)

All the best and a good recovery!

Thank you all

I have bathed her eye with warm boiled water ... my wife will call our good vet first thing tomorrow morning and make an emergency appointment...

Eye treatment and medication is the same as for dogs, cats and rabbits, so any decent general vet should be able to deal with an eye injury. ;)

Hi

Just to say Aimee’s eye is a lot better this morning when I bathe her again (the eye itself still had a opaque colour almost like a cataract though under brighter lights) will see a vet anyway just for a full check up .. will keep you posted ...

The opaque colour means that there is still an infection that has unfortunately penetrated further inside the eye. :(
She will need antibiotic, maybe even oral ones to work deeping inside the eye; but that is for your vet to decide upon a thorough investigation. Please try to have her seen ASAP!

Please get hold of some plain artificial tear gel and apply that 3-6 times daily. This will additionally help to heal the infection in the chamber between the cornea and the eyeball but it cannot replace an antibiotic. Always wait at least half an hour after applying any tear gel to allow any other products to be fully absorbed. Tears drops will do in a pinch but they are much more difficult to apply and not as effective and long lasting. Rehydrating an infected can really contribute to the healing process. Many vets will now routinely prescribe a lubricant for that reason, but not yet all.

Got her seen to today, wife said that vet reckons was an ulcerated eye as a result of an injury.

Had an injection, eyedrops to take home and back Thursday for a further checkup ... she has been very brave 😊

Please also use the tear gel, which you can get from any pharmacy.
It has been prescribed by my own vets in comparable situations and it has really made a huge difference re. comfort in the eye and speeding up the healing process. Antibiotic tear drops tend to dry the eye and make it itchy, so having something soothing after 30-60 minutes is making a difference, ;)

I hope it heals quickly for her. They are very sore.

Just an update, Amiee has been religiously given the prescribed drops (was advised we were given artificial tears too) her eye have stopped being half shut, less receded and piggy is very lively, playful and eating well(although her droppings are smaller than usual)

The downsides is her eye is still cloudy and blood shot at the top corner, more so today ... thinking of phoning the vets this morning when they open..

I can’t see your attachment but it sounds like she needs to see a vet. She may need a longer or different course of treatment.

Aww bless her, my Orca is a hay poke queen, she had a similar looking problem months ago, we did about 4 different sorts of drops over a few months & her eye has been cloudy since :(

However, since shes had the problem with that eye-she's also done the same with the other one :(
This was treated with Clinigel eye drops (same as other eye injury) & a backup of about a week of Baytril oral antibiotics, the vet said the eye was infected, but also had a small bleed in the eye which is why it was red too.

I would take your gorgeous looking girl :luv: back to the vets & ask if they think it needs some oral antibiotics to treat the infection internally in addition to the eye drops?

Orca's eye treated with both has cleared up beautifully (unlike the other side just treated with drops).
She's had a few eye pokes/bleeds since, treated the same & all's good now :) (well for the moment - touches wood quickly!)

I also had some loxicom left from a previous problem & the vet said to give her some for a couple of days to ease any pain.

Healing vibes being sent your way for a full and speedy recovery. xx
