Bought what I thought was 2 girls from pets at home 2 weeks ago, (purposely waited an extra week for the girls!)
Been for a general check at the vets this morning and turns out they are boys! Full on balls and tails there lol totally gutted and unsure what to do...

Firstly I would contact the Pets at Home store and tell them what has happened. Obviously the staff have made a mistake and need to be more observant in future!

Why are you gutted? What is wrong with boars? Why did you specifically want sows?

I don't have space for a bigger cage, also the risk of having to separate them if they start to fight (one already gets pushed out of places by the other)
They were for my daughter who wanted girls.
Boys tend to smell more than girls too

This nearly happened to me with pets at home, they told me they were girls in one side and I picked out two guineas, it wasn't till they got them out for a check that they said they were in fact boys. Luckily I found out before i'd paid, and got two from the girl section.
Terrible that this happened to you. What if you'd already got girl guineas and bought two thinking they were girls to add to your girls!

The girl even double checked them and said 'yep these are definitely girls!' I've always thought one looked like a boy so when the vet told me he was I was thinking god don't like the other be pregnant (they have been humping each other)
I've rang pets at home and they have said I can get a refund but they have no females. I feel awful because I do really love them but just don't have the space for a bigger cage :(

I have just been to the wonderful wheek and squeak rescue to choose a pair of guineapigs today.

They are in Bishops Waltham so not massively far from you. Do stubbington ark take guineapigs?

Good luck sorting it out. What a disappointment for you ...

Boars can and do make lovely pets.
Many members on the forum keep pairs of boars who are happy together and very affectionate pets - both with their partner and their owners. My Mr Ted was a neutered boar and he had so much personality. I would have loved another boar when he passed but Mollie was not keen on any of the suitors we offered her so we ended up with another sow.
I wouldn't say boars are necessarily smellier than females -unless they are going through a bonding when it can get whiffy. Any piggies can be whiffy if not cleaned out regularly.
If your piggies are happy together and you and your daughter have bonded with them it would be a shame to hand them back to the store, but I do understand that under strict consumer law you are entitled to do so. Aside from finding they are males is there anything otherwise wrong with them?
What size cage do you have?

Hey, I managed to take the males back :( I was in total tears but I really needed a bigger cage as they were already unhappy with each other. I managed to get 2 girl babies from someone (who also was sold a male instead of female) they are nearly 7 weeks and fell in love with them straight away!

I am so sorry that the whole ordeal was so upsetting but I am glad you managed to find two sweet little baby girls to steal your heart.

Hey. I brought 4 girl bigs from pets at home 3 years ago. Weeks into owning them one gave birth to twins. All pets at home offered was to take the babys and sell them. Wasnt happening so i kept them. And since i had 2 pigs before i brought the girls it went from 2 to 8 in weeks. I love the pigs but would never buy from there again.

Hello and welcome @piggymumof6 . I have slightly edited your post above as we, as a forum, have to ensure that posts cannot be misconstrued or be considered defamatory.

Sadly many pet shops make mistakes in sexing piggies. We do see this on the forum where people end up with unexpected babies as a result of a pet shop mis-sexing their piggies. However not all pet shops or branches of pet shops have the same level of experience.

Our ethos on the forum is to adopt from rescue rather than to buy from pet shops at all. Piggies in rescues have been properly sexed and health checked before re-homing. However we do accept that not all parts of the country are blessed with reputable rescues, and at times not everyone can find a rescued piggy as a companion for a bereaved piggy. We welcome all members and their piggies, wherever they came from.

We would love to see pictures of your piggies.

Yer i know all shops aint the same and piggys are hard to sex. Just think shops should be more suportive even iv its a bit of free food or a voucher on some to suport the extras.
Oh well i like the fact they didnt notice otherwise i wouldn't have got the twins. And since they been here from before they were born they are really friendly and not bothered by anything.
how do i put pics on here? it wont let me (I'm on phone)

Oh now iv go it lol.
