Just thought Id add something posotive.ive heard and seen alot of comments on here saying can a guinea pig get through pneumonia.my pig had it 4 days ago.he was almost dead.got him straight to vets.got him put on baytril by mouth.and penicilin by injection.it has saved his life.alot of ppl say dont give penicilin to pigs it is deadly to them.i asked my vet and theyve confirmed that is true but only if you give it by mouth.injection by needle is fine because it doesnt destroy the gut flora as it would if it was given oraly

Thankyou.just in time for christmas.his digestive system shut down a week before aswell(more to it than that).hes stil on oral meds for this too.has cost us about 400 in total to fix him lol.worth every penny though.i made the mistake of feeding too much cabbage and kale and not enough green hay which is now most of his diet. I think the pneumonia was caused by damp urinated newspaper as a base layer bedding. I clean him twice a week aswell but have decided to use fleece now it dries better and I can alternate between fleeces.just to note he does have floor time with his bro.but they dont get on with being in the same cage.

Please be aware that penicillin can be fatal for guinea pigs and other rodents. Depending on the strain and the fitness, guinea pigs can survive pneumonia quite well, but you often need stronger antibiotics than baytril. You also may need to hand feed,

Fantastic to hear he's all clearUOTE]
Thanks. Hes got 2 more probs now tho. Hes been scratching alot plus hes been dropping nuggets when attempting to eat them.hes fine on all other food though.i think he could have mange and some problems with molars. Hes eating nuggets still but not as easy. I live in northampton and ive heard on here that I happen to live near one of the best vets in england (duston cat and rabbit clinic) a guy named simon maddox runs it who is apparently an expert on guinea pigs
