My guinea pig ate plastic from a plastic sheet she was on. I put a blanket on top and tucked the plastic out of the way for floor time, but she and her husboar appear to have dug up the blanket under one of their hides, and have eaten a lot. She retched this morning and I'm really worried, but she still has an appetite 14 hours since. We are going to phone the vet today, but we are so scared.

I agree with Claire.it should all work it's way through the gut.monitor what comes out in the way of poos.maybe weight once aday to ensure they are maintaining there weight.a visit to the vets if you are concerned at all.

Thank you so much, is it a problem that she was gagging and retching for a minute but then went back to normal?

That won't be from the plastic I don't think as they can't vomit. They usually do it when there's something stuck in there throat that may be too bit to go down, so they do that retching type motion to get it back into their mouth to chew it up some more before swallowing. Couple of my gutsy pigs do it. Normally when I top up their hay with the posh stuff and they get a bit overexcited. 😅

Thank you! I knew they couldn't vomit, which is actually what panicked me most, as I thought that meant she was really ill, but that is so relieving to hear that other pigs do it. None of mine 5 I've owned have done that before, so that definitely is a relief! Especially as when I researched it, nothing came up about it being a normal thing, hence I made this account this guineapigforum this morning! She's acting normal now, and it's been 24 hours since she ate it, so fingers crossed she's alright now. Thanks again! X🐹🐹🐹🐹🐹

I woke up one morning to discover Jake had eaten a plastic bowl. He survived, didn't need to see a vet in the end, but I've refused to use plastic in any cage since lol.

Awww thank you all so much! Glad to hear Jake survived and I might not let them use their plastic ball now unless I can supervise! X

When I made an account and joined this forum this morning, I had no idea how helpful and kind everyone would be. I didn't think my questions would be answered for weeks, but everyone was so quick to respond with the most useful and relieving answers. I'm so grateful to all of you, and I look forward to joining in with lots of other piggy conversations on here! Zippie seems to be doing well, and thanks to all of your responses, I'm no longer shaky with nerves!

I promise you, we've all had those same moments. If it makes you feel any better, I joined the forum to ask if guinea pigs could use a bowl instead of a bottle for their water because the one I had wasn't working, lol. It was an obvious answer, but when you're panicking at all for any reason, it's always nice to have someone else say it too.

We are all a friendly bunch and it is an active forum. We do our best to make sure every post gets a response. You will see that there are some areas of the forum which are monitored (the chat areas in which this post is is not monitored the same as the care sections - and as you have seen the chat areas still get plenty of responses!) so if you need advice about a health issue, then if you post in the health and illness section, those of us with H&I badges in our signatures specifically monitor that and every post will definitely get a response.

Hello and welcome to the forum. I’m pleased Zippie is ok. They do like to worry us don’t they. We are a super friendly bunch on here.

Your piggies are gorgeous 🥰
