I woke up this morning to find my Guinea pig dragging herself around the enclosure having lost the use of her hind legs. I don't see how she would of injured her spine as the enclosure doesn't have any high areas for her to fall from. I wasn't able to take her to the vet in the morning. i gave her plenty of fresh hay and left food and water within her reach. Tonight I checked on her again and she was able to move her right hind leg but her left one was still limp. She was also covered in wee and poo and wasn't able to control her bladder when I picked her up. I didn't want to bring her in incasee the sudden temperature change made her worse and she lives with three other piggies in a draught proof shed with an outdoor run so she is kept warm. I cleaned her and again left her with fresh dry hay. i am taking her to the vets first thing in the morning but I would really like to know what is wrong with her. Her urine also looked slightly red and I don't know if it was from the beetroot this morning or if it was blood? Please help because I am so worried
We had a worry this afternoon when a huge lump appeared on her belly. We were in the waiting room at the vets when I noticed. The lump was a hernia which will be reduced when her leg is better. It appeared because the muscle wall had a small rip but it should heal fine on its own. There was a scratch on her back which suggested that one of my larger Guinea pigs may of accidentally climbed in her. She had no fractures, just some bruising and she was able to feel her left foot when being examined. We were given anti inflammatory medicine to be given once a day which she enjoyed. When I got home, I fed her water through the syringe as she hadn't drank much. She looks a lot happier and I'm sure she is feeling better. I lined a hutch with a towel and lots of hay for her to recover in. I also gave her dried grass and pellets as well as some veggies. For the next few days, her and another small Guinea pig will stay in the hutch until she is well enough to go back into the enclosure. The incontenance was because some muscles controlling her bladder and bowels were bruised but that should go in a few days. We were also given fibre plex to help harden her poo and hopefully she will be fully recovered in a week or so
