Hi, my 6 year old guinea pig died today (and i'm gutted), but i'm now worried about how to care for the remaining guinea pig who has barely moved all day. I know that obviously she will be sad, but will she get over it or am i likely to lose her too? What can i do to help her through her time of need?

I'm so sorry to hear you lost your piggie. Your remaining piggie will be sad and grieving for their companion like you or i would, so they will need lots of love and attnetion, lots of cuddles and treats, and when you are ready it would be nice for you to take the remaining piggy to a rescue to choose its own new friend.

xx

When my sister lost one of her guineas, she put a small teddy bear into the cage which seemed to provide some comfort for the remaining one in the short term. Her little boy would cuddle up to the teddy and sleep next to it.

I'm not sure if it would work with yours, but it may be worth a try. It would probably be best to keep an eye though, in case she decides to try to eat the teddy instead!

As Toffeewoffee said, once the grieving process is over it would be a good idea to find them a new friend. Most rescues offer 'dating' to match guineas with a suitable partner.

Very sorry for your loss. RIP little one x

Thanks for your kindness....each reply makes me cry a liitle more! It's been an emotional day, I had to go and get my Dad to help with the burial as I just couldn't bring myself to put her in the ground! :o(

I will give her lots of cuddles and try a small bear with her tonight and see what happens.

Thanks again

I'm so sorry, I know that it is incredibly difficult when they leave us. She reached a wonderful age for a guinea, and I'm sure she had six fantastic years with you.

When I lost one of my boys leaving on the radio would provide some sort of comfort for my remaining boy. He would wheek away to it every now and then and popcorn occasionally. It might be worth a try. Sorry for your loss, it's always difficult xx

Really sorry for your loss. Piggies feel loss just as we do, so expect her to be quiet for the next few days or so. Keep a close eye on her to make sure she is eating and spend as much time with her as possible.
When you feel ready it may be worth contacting a local rescue to look at getting her a new friend.

RIP Little Piggie

Aww, so sorry for your loss :( Hopefully after a bit of love you'll both be ready to welcome a new baby into your home :) xx

Ahh, I'm so sorry. Where does your piggy live? I only ask as, if she lives outside, it might be a good idea to bring her inside where she will at least see you more? Another thing that I've done in the past is to put an old jumper that smells of me in with a bereaved pet, in the hope that it might bring a bit of comfort.
Best wishes x>>

Sorry for your loss Weliboots, I was in the same position this time last week and I'm still very sad about losing my Jerry. He left his brother fudge behind so I was concerned too. I took advice and placed a comforter in his bed (I cut the sleeve off my piggy cuddling fleece) and rolled it up and put it in his bed. He seemed ok about being on his own and I made sure I paid extra visits and gave extra cuddles/treats and he has bounced back in fact today he squeaked for his grass for the first time in ages. I was so happy. All the best to you and I hope your piggy gets over her cagemate soon.
Did she die of old age or illness?
