My guinea pig Rose died suddenly a few days ago. I found my other guinea pig Lily next to her. I took Rose out and buried her in my backyard. I know it is cruel to keep guinea pigs alone but I don’t really want another guinea pig. I love guinea pigs but I don’t really want to continue the cycle of getting another one after my pig dies. I also don’t want to get rid of my current guinea pig because I’ve had her for years. I’m just kind of stuck on what to do.

Hi and welcome

Have you considered contacting a good rescue and asking whether it was possible to adopt a piggy of theirs that would revert to the rescue again when Lily passes away?

The last piggy of the line is always the most difficult to care for well.

Hello!
Yes I tried that. The shelter said that they do not want to adopt a guinea pig to me for a little while just for me to give it back, they’d rather try to find its forever home.

How old is your remaining piggie? How is she coping being on her own? Although it's always better to have pigs in groups, an older pig who is coping well would probably be a better candidate for living alone with lots of human company than a young pig who has years left to live who is pining away for a companion. Keep a good watch on her to make sure she is eating, drinking, maintaining weight, etc. If it's not a crisis situation, you have time to see how the situation plays out for a bit.

My Rainbow piggie Gizmo lived on his own for 11 months after his cagemate died. Gizzie was 5 when Lenny passed. He wouldn't accept anyone else. Lenny was the love of his live. He seemed to accept being on his own OK. I think it helped that Lenny went into his forever sleep one night and Gizmo was by his side and understood what had happened to his best mate. Each piggie is different and your remaining piggie may pine away.
