I made an account on here just to ask this question because I am so confused right now.
My guinea pig unfortunately died this morning, and I've decided that I'm going to bury him in the garden. Before I do that, I wanted to wrap him up and place him into a shoebox. It's taken me a long time because it's obviously very upsetting, but I've managed to transfer him from his cage into the shoebox. However, somehow he only has three legs and I'm very confused. He's always had four, and there doesn't seem to be a wound which might suggest it breaking off or anything like that. I've looked around a bit in the cage just in case, and if can't see anything. He probably still has it and I just can't see it, but I'm so confused. I won't do it right now, but would I be allowed to post pictures on here? He's obviously dead so it might be upsetting to some people, so is there a way I can hide the photo so only people that chose to see it will be able to?

Hi and welcome!

I am very sorry that it is under such distressing circumstances. In rare cases, a very upset companion can gnaw on its companion. If you cannot find a wound or signs of bleeding, then whatever has happened will have happened to the body and not be the cause of his death.

Could you please give us a bit more background information. did he die in your arms or did you find him dead this morning? When did you see him last alive? Was he an indoors piggy or have you got him in a hutch outside? How secure is it re. foxes? Has he got a companion? How old was he?

If he has got an outdoors companion, please bring him inside, especially in the current storm.

Hello, yes of course I wasn't very clear in the original message. I have actually "found" his leg now, but if you still want me to answer the questions I can :) because he was lying in his side, his leg was kind of flattened and it was kind of buried in his fur.
I found his dead this morning, so no he wasn't in my arms. He was alive when I went to bed last night (2am) and I think he was dead at 8.30am cause my mum came in to the room when I was sleeping and she didn't tell me to go to school (I haven't spoken to her yet, but I assume she came I to my bedroom and noticed he was dead, and them let me take the day off). Yes he was indoors, he lived in my bedroom. No he doesn't have a companion because he ideas about four years ago. He was 7

I am very glad that you have found his leg. What a relief for you! He must have likely passed away earlier in the night for this to happen.

You are most welcome to post a tribute to your boy in our Rainbow Bridge section. It can well be that his heart has simply given out or he had a stroke. He has lived to a very good age, though!

7 is a good age for a guinea pig, so he likely died of old age and his heart gave way. Some guinea pigs live to be a bit older - I had a guinea pig that lived to be 10 so it can happen, but not that often and 7 is a good age. So if he was not unwell at 2am when you went to bed, it points to him passing away of old age. I had a guinea pig who was 7 and he had a stroke and died in my arms, so this can happen too when they are older.
