Please help me! :( I got hobi last week and there was a little dry patch and flaky skin then few days later there was another patch on the other side. Last night she was okay but when I got up today and check her up there was a big wound on her back. It was like the skin is going off her back. Please help me :(((

You need to see a guinea pig knowledable vet asap. Not a standard cat a dog vet. Best wishes 👍.

Please done leave it. Infection will set in

Can betadine be helpful for the meantime? I really don't have money to go to the vet.

I dont wish to sound harsh BUT as a pet owner it is your duty of care to get your guinea pig checked by a vet. It sounds as though your piggy had this when you bought him - where did you get your piggy from? They really should be liable to help you with vet fees. If you leave the wound and it gets worse, your pig will be in pain and it will get infected. Are you in the UK? We have a vet locator section.

I really have no idea if that medication is even safe for piggies. Even if it is it is not a good idea to treat at home as you could make diagnosis of the problem more difficult. Your piggy needs a vet as a matter of urgency. The longer you leave it the more expensive and drawn out treatment could be as there might be secondary infections from the open wound

@Fnzaxx If you only got her last week and can't afford to keep her then I suggest that you return her to the rescue/shop that you got her from.

If you got her from a breeder who won't take her back then you either need to surrender her to a rescue so they will get her the medical attention she needs and then find her a new home, or you need to explore options on getting help towards vet care.

Your profile doesn't state where you are but in the UK there is the PDSA that is a vet for those on low incomes. Alot of vets will offer payment plans too.

Please get her to the vet one way or another.

Hi there
There's a possibility this could be mites or a fungal infection such as ringworm (there are others) if it is, it's highly contagious.

Ringworm is very common in shop bought piggies in the first few weeks - it's an opportunist that usually strikes when the Guineas are stressed with a low immune system.

My Tiggy had a dry scabby patch on her back, that I thought was a scratch mark to begin with, then it grew very quickly into a bald patch & she had ringworm, she had a very big sore patch on her back, the vet prescribed some Malaseb anti fungal shampoo, but other members have had a quicker healing process with itrafungal oral medication (prescription only&usually expensive).
All 4 of my girls got ringworm & needed treatment, but they've all recovered now. :)

If you bought your Guinea in the UK you should be able to claim your vet treatment costs if it's a pet store.
I think a while ago it was someone from the USA that had to surrender their piggy back for treatment at the store&left all details. The store then contacted her when piggy had recovered. (personally I'd prefer not to give back the piggy as I would be afraid I wouldn't get her back, but it worked out fine for the member on here)

I'm not sure where you stand if it's a breeder.
Some vets in the UK do pet plans as suggested above.

Please have her seen as soon as possible by a Guinea savvy vet
(recommended UK Guinea vets link on menu bar on here).
For the USA check on the Guinealynx website for recommendations

If it is fungal, time is of the essence... It will also get worse before it gets better :(

There's a few links/stickies on here that are good for ringworm advice.
Ringworm: Hygiene And Pictures

Please see a vet for a proper diagnosis & treatment though.
It is a bank holiday on Monday here in the UK so an appointment today would probably be easier & a lot cheaper if you're based here, also vets for pets branches don't charge generally for weekend appointments.

Let us know how u get on, good luck & healing vibes to your little one.
Xx

Hi!

Please see a vet promptly and have Hobi checked for ringworm or mange mites.
You can find information on your customer rights (your right to reclaim any vet cost for being sold already infected guinea pigs, i.e. damaged ware) in the green link below.
There are also pictures and more information links on both problems via this link here: What to check and look out for in new guinea pigs (vet checks, sexing, parasites&illness)
Please note that these are serious and potentially fatal health problems that cannot be cured with a little home DIY.

Please also consider that guinea pigs are a ground roaming group species that is not wired to live on their own in a tiny cage.
If at all possible, please get her a same sex companion. It is important for both their mental and physical health and greatly influence with plenty of space to run in and a good hay based diet. The appropriate minimal cage size to run around in and exercise the muscles is the same for two guinea pigs as it is for one; a second guinea pig doesn't cost a lot more in terms of food and non in bedding; but it really makes all the difference for Hobi. It is the best and most loving gift ever you can make her.

If you cannot afford to look after Hobi as you should, then please return her to the shop. There are no cheap and easy pets. It is a life that feels pain as much as you do and that is entirely dependent on you for the next 5-7 years of a normal life span. It is not a toy that you can put away and forget about. Wait until you have the means to look after your pets well and in the meantime learn about what any pets you want to keep really require according to welfare standards and species needs, so you can be a good and responsible owner when the time is right for you.

Hi. When I got my girls(3 yrs ago) from a Uk pet shop (sorry but I didn't know better at the time, nowadays I wouldn't do the same) after a week or so they showed signs of skin infection/ringworm. I went back and they paid all the vet expenses until they were cured. I just needed to show the receipt of my initial purchase. They did try to avoid the payment innitially but I was well informed about my rights and in the end they paid. In regards to the treatment: it took several weeks (i think 2 months) until they were cured but thankfully they responded well to treatment. But I agree that it will worse until it improves. Just take them to the vets as soon as since that will influence the outcome/recovery time. Keep us updated.

I'm sorry for being a bad owner, hobi was given by my friend as a gift so I don't really know what to do with my guinea pig. As of now her wound is getting better, the wound is dry now. If I save up some money, I will take her to the vet. Thank you all for your help and suggestions. I will try my best to pet hobi so she could live longer.

If you're a new owner you should do a lot of research! I'm so glad Hobi is doing better! Lot's of hugs for Hobi and you!
