- In my Guinea Pig's shed mainly! LOL
WRONG!
If your Guinea Pig is bleeding from her vagina - this does NOT mean she is on her period! Guinea pigs do not bleed when in heat; they are totally different animals to humans.
"So, what should I do? Are their any home remedies to help my pig?"
Take her to the vet. That's it - all you can do. I wouldn't bother wasting my time with trying to discover home remedies for a problem you don't even fully understand.
I know it can be a lot of money to go to the vets - but my motto is 'If you can't afford the vet, don't get the pet'. Because yes in the moment you may think
"Oh but I'm helping an animal by giving it a good home"
But your not if your not going to be able to help it in its hour of need.
"I'm worried - what could be wrong with her?"
Now I'm not a vet myself - I just wanted to post this article to help those newbie piggy owners out their who may be having trouble understanding things like this; which in itself is understandable. I never knew piggies didn't bleed whilst on their period until a good 4 months after I had them. I thought 'Well other animals bleed, so Guinea Pigs must aswell'.
Anyway, I don't know what could be wrong with her. The internet says things such as either a miscarriage (perhaps if the pig had accidentally been put in with boars?), bladder stones or urinary tract infection - neither of which are very nice.
Now, the main reason I have posted this thread is just to educate pig owners who perhaps aren't that educated on pigs yet, and to help them if they were every to come across this scenario with their girls.
The whole reason that I came to think of this though was when one of my girls was bleeding. I took her to the vets, he thought it could be bladder stones - did an x-ray (£40) and discovered there was nothing there. So he then prescribed some medication (£10) (I have totally forgotten what was now - it was a good few weeks ago), and after 10 days everything seemed fine. Well, to be honest, after the first day she was no longer bleeding; but obviously I would use it for the recommended amount of time.
I'm just grateful that we caught it on time - whatever it was (he thought it was most likely an infection, but the funny thing was she seemed her usual self :S). I just hope that others can catch it early, too.
