My guinea pig, Chubby, has been acting very strange the past couple weeks, her hair is becoming frizzy and she is losing hair everywhere, it's all falling out, her chin is very swollen and she hasn't pee'd or poo'd for a couple days now, I found that one of her poos were stuck in her private area and I took it out and washed her but she still doesn't poo or pee. She hardly moved in the past week or so. Also under her private part and a bit right there is this kind of lump, I think it is one of her poos and that are stuck. PLEASE HELP ME I'm WORRIED FOR HER!

She definitely needs a trip to the vet asap. Sounds like cysts or something but please take her soon to get a diagnosis.

I second that - you need a vet as quickly as possible!

Hi Epsilan,

Firstly, have you talked to, or taken Chubby to, a vet? It sounds like she has multiple problems, some of them possibly linked, and the longer you wait the less chance you have of treating them successfully. If you need help finding a good vet, please do let us know roughly where you are - one of us may be able to advise you on reputable vets in your area, or even of a local rodentologist who can help.

The hair loss could be a skin problem such as mites or a fungal infection; it need identifying and treating as soon as possible, as the irritation caused by some skin conditions can be difficult to combat once it gets past a certain stage.

Does her swollen chin feel like it could be a large lump? What does it feel like - soft or hard? Abscesses are common on the lower jaw, and can grow to large sizes and eventually burst on their own if left untreated. However there are other causes of generalised swelling; even mites can lead to such swelling if not treated early enough. Again, a good vet or rodentologist will probably be able to identify the problem there.

The lack of urine and faeces is a concern and is suggestive of no food and water intake. In a guinea pig, this can quickly become serious, due to the way their digestive system is designed to cope with near- constant food intake.
I do not recommend starting syringe-feeding until she has been seen by a vet; there could be a problem with her digestive system, such as a blockage or bloat, which must be ruled out or treated before you attempt to introduce food once again. She will need plenty of fluids, ideally injected (subcutaneous) by the vet. The lack of poops may well be simply a lack of food, but she needs a full checkover to rule out such problems.

The lethargy is a general but serious sign of illness and will not go without her problems being tended to.

Please do contact a vet ASAP. Best of luck, keeping my fingers crossed for her.

Chubby hasn't ever drank water, no matter how hard we tried to get her used to it. So we try to give her juicy fruits and vegetables such as watermelon and tomatoe. I live in Canada and i'm looking for a vet right now.

Make sure your vet has experience in exotic animals (this is I believe the grouping that piggies come under)

I hope you get her there quickly, piggies can go downhill very quickly.

Good luck

She passed away today, she looked really in pain in the morning, she was shivering while laying down and then passed away a couple hours after that. I'm 13 so I had no money to pay the 150$ checkupfee let alone the medicine and surgery costs.

I am very sorry for your loss.

For future reference, it is actually your parents responsibility to ensure pets are cared for and taken to the vets, as you are legally viewed as a minor.

Again, I'm sorry you lost your piggie. *Hugs*

It is really horrible that your piggy died and you must be feeling really sad :(

If your parents can not afford medical attention for pets may I suggest that you dont replace her with another as it is unfair to the animal.

There are people out there who would do such things, unfortunately. However, more sadly, there are many children who are in this situation genuinely. Even if there is doubt, unless proven to be a hoax it's better to advise as normal, it is not worth the risk...in any case the info can be useful to others!

Rip

It is awful that people could lie but you can't be sure so I think you should see it all as the truth unless proved otherwise.

Epsilan: I'm so sorry for your loss. It is definitely up to your parents to get your piggy to a vets. I'm also a minor but I do jobs round the house and babysit for friends and family to pay for my piggies. It's harder with GCSE work but my brothers all chip in with their pocket money in an emergency! Again I'm sorry for your loss.

RIP little piggy:(

Get her to the vet ASAP! (I'm sorry I dont know much about what could be occuring with her, it does sound urgent and she needs help fast.) Hope things work out for you and the little one. <3 My best wishes to you both!
