I need some advice on my 4 year old Guinea pig.
He's had dental surgery for first time Friday and now he's even worse than before, he's not eating hard foods at all and he's trying to refuse critical care but I hate forcing him if he doesn't want it. It's like he can't swallow the food?. I'm not sure why that is.
I think the vet has messed up here because I think she's filed his two back teeth too much to the point where he cannot chew food at all and she also filed his front bottom teeth down alot even though they weren't long at all so she didn't need to touch them so now his tongue sticks out when trying to eat so he can't pick up food because it's so short but I'm not sure if what she's done is right?. At first I thought they were gone as they are that short.
I took him to the vets 4 times already because he had lost weight and was fussy with his food, first two appointments they didn't seem concerned that he lost quite amount of weight and I booked third appointment last Fri for an x-ray so that nothing was missed, when I arrived the vet said they would take an x-ray which I signed a form for it and if there is any dental work needed doing they said they would do it straight after x-ray so they kept him there all day. I had no updates that day so I had to call to find out as I was worried about him because sedation is risky for Guinea pigs but they said on phone that they did mild sedation for x-ray.
When I collected him after his surgery, I asked for printed x-ray images so I can have a look myself and the receptionist kept putting me off said they'll have to ask the vet so I waited until the next day, they emailed me two photos that the vet took on her phone of before and after during surgery but I said to them where is the x-ray images and they took ages to respond so I emailed them again and still no answer so I called them asking for the x-ray images and it turned out that they didn't even do them which I'm angry because they have done the surgery without an x-ray? They cannot even see all the back teeth so what if they are also over grown?. They even said that if the back teeth that can't be seen by eye are over grown they cannot do them anyway but they did the two big ones that you can see by eye.
I'm really stuck because vets in my area don't seem to know much about guinea pigs and I had no choice but to let them do it. It might not even be the teeth if they had done the x-ray. Surely filing teeth wouldn't make him worse than he was before?.
What am I supposed to do for him? It's costing alot of money if he's not improving and I'm stuck because I don't want to take him back if they aren't doing the correct treatment as they didn't listen to me about wanting an x-ray. It's very hard to find a good vet.
I also spoke to Simon vets that everyone on here seems to recommend to ask for advice and they can't help unless I bring him in which isn't possible as I can't get there which is so frustrating. They wouldn't even give advice or recommend another vet nearer.
When I feed him critical care or water it's like it doesn't go down? It's like there's a blockage if that makes sense? I don't want to take him back to the vets because I don't trust them and I feel it's not fair on him to keep taking him back as it must be so stressful. I feel terrible as I see guinea pig owners that manage to keep their guinea pigs going for months with critical care food & they get through it but I feel like I'm falling him as I can't stop him losing weight everyday & it's really tiring doing this.
I've also complained to vets by email this morning and have had no response yet.
Can someone have a look at the two photos of his teeth and confirm that they were over gown? I'm no expert but I don't think they were that bad?.
His weight was 1467g and he's now 1109g.

I think first photo was a before and second was a after? I'm not sure. I'm not impressed that they took photos by phone instead of an x-ray.

I'm so sorry to hear this.

Sadly a badly done dental will make things worse. It upsets the balance in the mouth and can cause them to not be able to eat.
Front teeth filed too short will stop them from being able to pick food up.

Simon isn’t going to be able to give advice as he hasn’t been able to see your piggy. There aren’t many dental vets in the country.

Sadly all we can suggest is that you continue to syringe feed at least 60ml per day and try to get him to a vet.
If you can’t get him to Northampton, is there perhaps someone who can take him for you?

I've just managed to find a exotic vet for this Friday, an hour away and he only comes to their surgery twice a month. I was hoping for today as I'm worried he will go down hill but they didn't have any appointments.
I can't get 60ml into him, it's very hard. I can only get about 15ml in him a day. It's awful that he finds it hard to swallow

Oh gosh, so he isn’t eating anything for himself?
Unfortunately 40ml is the absolute minimum for survival if they aren’t eating anything for themselves. A healthy piggy eats around 100ml a day.
Are you able to try hand feeding him fresh grass?

Is he salivating?
If he can’t swallow anything then sadly that is an emergency. It’s could be a blockage or his tongue is so trapped he cant move food

Good luck at the vets on Friday. Just get in as much critical care as you can. Can he eat grass or hay if you poke it into his mouth? If he really isn’t swallowing anything at all it could be a sign he has a blockage. I’m sorry.

No he won't eat anything at all. I've tried everything, he's not interested as he turns his back on me. Yes he's salivating, I'm feeding him critical care now and it just comes out of his mouth even when I try to put syringe a little further in his mouth rather than front usually but it doesn't seem to work.
That's what I thought. The exotic vets are supposed to call back at 4pm about painkillers and I will tell them it's an emergency now but I'm not very hopeful that they have anyone available as they did say the exotic vet has left the building so I will see what happens

It's not easy, it's all coming out of his mouth like there's a blockage but I'm trying my best. I've tried putting tiny bits of food in his mouth but he won't take it.
Can the vets do anything about blockage do you know?

Oh no. I’m so sorry for you. You are absolutely doing your best for your boy. It does sound like he is unable to swallow. All you can do is get him seen again. But I totally understand why you don’t want to take him back to them.

Sorry I can’t offer any more advice. Was he swallowing before his dental?

Yes he was swallowing but he wouldn't eat alone in cage though. He was better before when I fed him by hand

How far away from Northampton are you? I’ve travelled 2 hours each way to see Simon and Kim. They really are amazing.

So sorry you are in such an awful predicament. I would just try to feed him and see what this exotics vet says and take it from there. Good luck to you and your little piggie 🤞

UPDATE- good news I hope.
The exotic vet said the reason he is not eating was because the normal vets did not give him a higher dose of pain meds as they gave me cat metacam when it should have been a dog metacam. He said that he's in pain because its sore from dental treatment and a tiny cut on his tongue. He was given 3 injections which should help him to eat again hopefully tonight and start metacam & antibiotics tomorrow morning. It wasn't a blockage after all. I'm very happy that I got a second opinion to put my mind at rest. He also said that it's not necessary to feed him every 4 hours with critical care as that is only for seriously underweight guinea pigs even though he had lost quite a lot of weight but has said that he's still at a normal weight which is a relief so I have more time to do other things without worrying. I can carry on feeding him critical care but only twice a day and he should eat other foods alone I hope. I really thought I would lose him but he just needed the right dose of painkiller, it's a shame that the normal vets are clueless about meds for Guinea pigs. Hopefully he will improve now.

Oh, thank goodness, I hope the stronger pain meds help him a lot! This must have been so stressful and such a frustrating situation with the vet, but you've done a great job at getting your little guy the help he needs. Poor little guy, I hope he feels better soon and starts eating again 🩷

I hope so too. It has been stressful two weeks! I was upset this morning thinking I would lose him. I'm so tired now, I'm glad meds & critical care are only twice a day now so I got some break. I hope dental issues don't come back! Thankyou

Well done you you've done a great job honestly, fingers and paws all crossed from all of us here in Staffordshire 🤞🐾
I couldn't give up, I pushed for an appointment even when they said they couldn't do it today so the vet stayed there an hour late so I really appreciated him doing that. I still paid the normal hours so I'm lucky. He was very kind and patient. At least I know where to go now for my guinea pigs as I didn't know they existed until someone told me earlier today so I'm very thankful. Thankyou :)

I hope the meds will help him.

However the advice the vet had given about not feeding him is dangerous. Hopefully the meds will make him feel better but while he is not eating for himself then you must syringe feed him and you cannot stop until he is eating enough hay independently to maintain his weight himself each day.

Critical care is not for seriously underweight piggies - it is for any pig who is not eating independently and can literally save their lives.

If he doesn’t eat independently and you don’t feed him then he will go into stasis and will become incredibly poorly.
It doesn’t matter is he is still a good Weight, if he loses weight each day then he isn’t eating.

Not Eating, Weight Loss And The Importance Of Syringe Feeding Fibre

To clarify, critical care twice a day would be fine if he was mostly back to eating hay normally but just needed a boost. You slowly taper off the syringe feeds as they eat more for themselves according to what the daily weight checks are telling you.
However you have said that he can’t pick hay up and isn’t eating at all, so until he can and does then he still needs plenty of feeds - 40-60ml or more to replace the loss of hay intake.

Thankyou for bringing this up, I've double checked with someone who came with me if this was correct and apparently the vet said feeding twice a day is only if he starts eating again my mistake, he said feed every 4-6 hours but I'm allowed to leave him over night so I can sleep. I'm glad you mentioned this now. To be honest I would have fed him more than twice a day anyway as I can't help myself and want to make sure that he is ok :)

Yes You can leave him overnight but he needs to have for enough during the day

Great news. Hopefully now with the correct medication he will soon be eating for himself. 🤞🏻

Same thing has happened to one of my boys today. Please forgive me if I'm hijacking the thread because that's not my intention but did your pig start to smell really strongly? I'll be taking him to the vet this evening so hopefully I get answers then but I'm really concerned for him.

It's no problem at all. No my Guinea pig didn't smell. I hope he's ok

I hope your pig's alright 🙁 It's great that you're getting him seen so quickly, I hope everything goes well at the vet and they figure out what's going on

I have tried to feed him this morning & afternoon today but I'm finding it difficult to make him take more than 15ml full syringe as he turns around refusing it & spits it out when he's finally had enough. I just don't want to stress him out by forcing him even though it is for his own good.
He is still not eating at all, I've tried putting tiny bit of lettuce in front of his mouth gently but he won't take it. I thought he would improve by now after the painkillers, he is looking miserable at the moment. I can't keep taking him to the vets as he's already been 5 times now. The vet said his mouth is sore but I thought painkillers were meant to help?

He probably won’t take more than that at a time. 15ml is a good amount at each sitting
You are aiming for 40-60ml a day, so the less he takes at each sitting the more sittings you need to do.

They will help but he won’t suddenly get his normal appetite back and if there is still an issue in his mouth then that needs to be resolved as well.

I'll see how he goes in a few days as he has only just started the stronger medication last night & the antibiotics should hopefully help as well. Thanks for replying.
