Hi everyone, I am new to this board and have some questions. My guinea pig Orea, recently developed a huge lump under his next and then I found one on his bottom yesterday. He was eating and drinking and talking up until this morning and had a vet appointment tomorrow. Does anyone know what this could have been? Ill probably never really know for sure but I don't understand as he was so healthy. Thanks

Sorry for your loss.
Loosing a guinea pig suddenly can be really hard, and without a full postmortem it is impossible to say why Orea died.
It does sound like you reacted quickly, and as Orea passed quickly it was obviously sudden and serious, so even if you had seen a vet it may not have been possible to save him.
Huge hugs to you.

Thank you. I thought he was just gaining weight, so I didn't think much of it and watched his diet, but then I turned him on to his back and he had no hair and this huge lump. I Googled and found that they get lumps. I also read that when guinea pigs gets sick, they go down hill pretty fast. You are probably right about the vet. Poor little guy : (

I am very sorry for your loss!

Without a post-mortem and a biospy of the lumps, it is unfortunately impossible to tell what has exactly caused his death - but some lumps can grow extremely fast (abscesses, cysts, tumour or lymphoma can all do it); you can basically watch them growing. It is a very frightening experience. It can be that the lump on the neck did start to press on some vital area or things had gone septic - but without a medical examination, all we can do is only speculate.

It is always very hard to take when you are left without any answers; it's happened to piggies of mine. As you have booked a vet appointment promptly, there is nothing you have to blame yourself for. You have done what every conscientious good owner should do and in that you have not failed Orea.

You are welcome to post a tribute to your beloved boy in our Rainbow Bridge section if or whenever it feels right for you. We all grieve differently, but it is there if you wish to make use of it at sme point.
