My Guinea Pig May Have Cystitis...any Tips That Worked For You?

Hi,
I've posted before about Lilly but we have gotten urine tests back that indicated cystitis/infection more than stones(but she hasn't ruled them out either). She is on .6ml septrin, .3ml metacam and one cystease capsule a day for two weeks to see how she gets on. She wheeks the odd day, but not every day when urinating still (she started last Saturday having been on baytril and .6 metacam a day for a week). Probiotic that someone here recommended came today so she gets that now too and had been getting 8-10ml syringe of water with a quater rubex dissolved in to build her up in case of infection.diet is low calcium, hay is burgess excel urinary health hay and timothy.

Anything else we could do?

I use cystease and metacam for any cases I get. Also use unsweetened cranberry juice and barley water (I make myself) is something I have tried of late with a case and seemed to have some effect.
 
We use Cystease regularly for Angus as it keeps his bladder doing the right thing longer term with the odd metacam dose if needed.

He had three courses of various antibiotics which did some good but he still intermittently gets problems. It can often be that the inflammation and pain is the problem rather than there being a true infection present so antibiotics are not always the answer unless it is proven on dipstick urine test or similar.

If symptoms persist or recur a lot it's also worth an ultrasound or X-ray to eliminate any signs of bladder lining tumour or bladder stones.

We are getting xray next week if she is still wheeking
 
Once the antibiotics cleared it we gave ours about 20 or 30 mls of organic unsweetened cranberry juice-and-water by dropper each day (luckily she loves it!) and the cystitis hasn't returned.
 
As several of my pigs have bladder issues they all have unsweetened diluted cranberry juice in their water bottles daily - probably about just under an inch per full water bottle - this encourages them to drink - they also have very little fruit in their diet as Bea loves oranges and can have no more than one piece of Satsuma a week as they set her cystitis off.

I really don't know - just know that oranges (probably because they are acid ) set Bea off - I stay away from lots of fruit because the sugar isn't that great for them,and they will also be getting a bit of sugar from the cranberry juice.
