I have 2 Guinea Pigs, whom I love dearly. Brandy passed away this morning. I was with her when it happened. I woke up this morning and she was lying on her side in her cage and wouldn't walk or move. I picked her up and cleaned her bum, she had diarrhea and had messed herself. I then wrapped her in a towel and called the vet, who said she was probably going to pass away and that she was healthy so it was old age and there was nothing I could do. So i just held her and talked to her and petted her until she passed away about 15 mins later. Kahlua is her cage mate and these are the first Piggies I have owned. I was wondering what I should do now for Kahlua. Should I get her a new cage mate or will she be okay by herself? Please help!

I'm so so sorry to hear this, i'm sure she realised just how much you loved her and was very grateful to spend her last moments in your arms, i hope it was peaceful.

Generally speaking GP's are better off in pairs or more as they are heard animals and enjoy company of their own kind, so maybe when your ready yiu may want to think about getting her a new comanion, i'm sure the perfect partner is in a rescue somewhere waiting to be rehomed. If you do decide you'd like to, then you could always take Kahlua dating where she can pick her own friend. In the mean time i'm sure she'd love lots of cuddles and kisses.

So sorry once again. xx

Thank you Toffee. I know she knew how much I loved her and I'm torn up about it but glad that I was there with her to comfort her when it happened. Both of them are very spoiled and happy little piggies. They get lots of attention and cuddle time. I have had Kahlua out of her cage with me a lot more than usual today, making sure she isn't lonely and giving her lots of kisses and snuggles. I can tell she knows that Brandy is gone and misses her though. Kahlua is usually very vocal and whistles and purrs a lot but she hasn't whistled at all today :( I think I will get another lil girl but not right away. I don't want to just go and replace Brandy like that so soon. She was the apple of my eye and a wonderful lil girl. Thanks again.

Bless her, its wierd how they know isn't it? Try not to think of it as replacing Brandy as non of us could replace our beautiful departed pets, think of it as a chance to provide a special new home for a piggie in need and a new companion for Kahlua. If you find she is off her food which could be possible then you may want to think about handfeeding mushed up pellets, but if need be we can cross that bridge if and when it comes to it. xx

Sorry for the loss of your piggie.

RIP Brandy

I am really sorry for the loss of your piggie. I lost my 7 year old girly last week :(

How old is Kahlua? Mine had a friend until she died aged 4, then she lived alone for 3 years because she was actually quite content on her own, & as she was an indoor piggie she always had lots of cuddles from her human family. With our previous piggies when one died we tried to get a friend for the lone piggy but the "new" one bit her badly:( I am not saying that could happen to you, but see how Kahlua is in the next two or three days, & if she is eating ok then you don't need to rush out to get her a new friend straight away.

I'm so very sorry for you loss. We all know what you are going through at the moment.

So sorry for your loss. It is heartwrenching to lose a loved friend. RIP little one.

I can't add anything useful to the advice. Best of luck with the future for Kahlua.

I'm so sorry but sounds like your pig had a good and long life full of love and care

When my rabbits sister died she was at risk of depression and so even though I was still grieving for buttercup we rescued another bunny for daisys sake and I'm glad we did as she had never been alone before
I don't know about GP when it comes to this however sorry I'm sure others will advise you though
