I have a guinea pig who is about 1 who was recently treated for mites twice with revolution. Her itching seems to have calmed but her dandruff had not on her butt. I also recently found out that guinea pigs can be allergic to pine which is what I have been using for bedding. So can the dandruff be an allergic reaction to the pine? Or should she maybe get more treatments for mites ?

Pine is not good so you need to change that straight away.

revolution is that ivermectin? What strength and how many treatments? We use xeno 440 in U.K.

I'm not 100 percent sure the dosage it's whatever the vet gave me. It was one dose than another 10 days later. And you I found out recently that pine is bad, have paper bedding on the way plus a new cage. And it's used for dogs and cats but my vet says it was safe to give to guinea pigs at a way smaller dosage. And xeno is a UK thing if I'm not mistaken, I'm currently living in the US

I am sure it is a US mite treatment, we use xeno the same way applied every ten days in three lots to kill eggs as true hatch @ Wiebke is revolution like xeno?

Revolution contains selamectin which is very similar to ivermectin, it should be a very effective mite treatment but this depends on the dosage of course- in the UK 3 treatments of xeno450 are recommended, 2 weeks apart... and if this is mange mites rather than hay mites the skin irritation may persist after the mites have gone... I would definitely check again with the vet! The vet can easily check a fur sample and skin scrape from the affected area under the microscope to see if the mites are gone :)

I agree with @Piggies&buns

Thx you. But I'm also wondering if the dandruff on the rear be a result of dry skin? Like from the bedding?

Bedding shouldn’t cause dry skin. As said above, the skin irritation can continue even after mange mites have cleared. Which type was she diagnosed with?

Idk tbh it was a diagnosis over the phone.

Hi, I see this post was Tuesday but there is no date. I assume it is this past Tuesday.
I took my Guinea to the vet yesterday after a week of watching my male chewing on his hind legs a lot this week. He bites at his inner thigh area, clearly he is uncomfortable. I bathed him but that did not help. The vet did not see anything but gave us Selamectin ( liquid placed between his shoulder blades every three weeks for 3 treatments) to treat for mites and an over the counter jock itch cream in case it is a fungus.
Plus I notice like you said, dry, I also notice 'white flakes' in his fur.
The vet was not 100% on diagnosis so we have to do both treatments and hope for the best. She also recommended I get a mild guinea pig shampoo and was his rear legs, butt area every few days to keep it clean. If you all learn of anything else keep posting, this site is wonderful. If I get any new info I will pass along too.

It would be better to start your own thread about yourself piggy. I don’t know about washing the piggy every few days. They keep themselves clean and should only really need washing if their bum is really dirty. Washing too often can also strip their skin of the essential oils.
