On the 29th January 2018, I had to make one of the hardest decisions of my life. I had to put my guinea pig Tom to sleep. I had come back from Spain after spending Christmas there and he seemed fine. A couple of days after we came home, his breathing started to become wheezy. I took him to the vets and the vet said there was nothing wrong with him. A couple of days went by and he still wasn't getting any better so I took him back. The vet then gave me medication for him and he had a chest xray the day after. On the xray, they found a white patch near where his heart and lungs were (they still to this day don't know what it was) and that's when they gave me stronger medication for him. He was then booked in for a check up in a weeks time to see if he had improved. That's the day I lost my best friend. I spent every evening giving him his medication to try and make him better but there was nothing I could do. He was just too poorly.

To Tom,
Nearly a week has passed since I had to let you go and today was the day I buried you in our garden. I'm still heartbroken and lost without you but I know your no longer suffering or in pain. You may be gone but you certainly won't be forgotten. RIP little guy. I love you so much xxxxx

I am so sorry you had to make that heart wrenching decision. I hope you can take some comfort from knowing it was the kindest thing as a caring owner you could do. Sending you hugs.
RIP sweet Tom.

I am ever so sorry that you had to let handsome Tom go; it is the kind of decision that we all dread because it is so heartbreaking. But is often the only (and the greatest) loving gift we have to prevent them from suffering unnecessarily.
Be sad, but take comfort in that you have done your best for Tom and that he couldn't have had a more loving piggy mum! You have not failed him.

If you struggle with your loss, try to write a diary with your feelings, but also with all your memories of Tom, little and large, as they come to your mind. Over time, you will find that there is more of Tom left in your heart than you think possible - and by writing it down, you will never lose him altogether! ;)

Popcorn free of pain at the Rainbow Bridge, Tom!

This has made me feel so much happier knowing that someone else thinks I've done the right thing I gave him the best life he could ever have and I'm proud of myself for that He has two other little friends (Terry and Clive - shown in my icon. Clive is left of Tom and Terry is right of Tom). Terry and Clive are housed together

I’m so sorry. As pet owners it’s the hardest decision we are eve called upon to make for our pets. The fact that you made that decision means you did not let him down in any way. You were brave enough to let him go. Huge hugs. Popcorn free handsome fellow xx
