He hasn't really been eating right for about a month now, he has been eating small amounts of pellets but still clearing his hay and fresh food, but 3 days ago he just really wasn’t himself, he was still eating his fresh food but nothing else. We took him to the vets and they said they couldn't find anything wrong with him, they said it could be arthritis as they said he is sore around his stomach and spine area. The next day he went off of all food completely and now he won’t anything at all. :( We phoned the vet yesterday morning and she gave us the supreme science recovery plus to syringe him, when we first gave it to him he couldn’t get enough of it but now we have to force it to him because he won’t eat it. He is eaten a little bit of hay this morning and a tiny piece of cucumber as well as the syringe stuff. He also looks like he is abit constipated as I can see poo like just in his bum and if I massage around that area it comes out, but there is another piece of poo when that one has come out and they are really small and wet looking :/ I don’t know weather this is because he is not eating?
I don’t know what to do and what is really wrong with him, we are back to the vets in 2 days time as they are closed over Easter. Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong with him and any tips to get him eating again?
Help much appreciated.

Hello Lauren and welcome to the forum

Has your vet examined your piggies teeth at all? What meds is on now?

If you can give your location hopefully we can suggest a cavy savvy vet who may serve your needs better.

It is vital that you continue to get food into your piggy, even if he doesn't want it so please continue with the syringe food. A sachet of recovery paste is enough for one day. If you need more advice/ideas what to feed please let us know.

I would have your boy checked for an internal growth. Loss of appetite is not a good sign! Have him seen by a vet as soon as you can. It is extremely difficult to give a diagnosis without any symptoms, even more so over the internet!

Please weigh any ill piggy daily; any healthy piggy weekly. A diminishing or complete loss of appetite is always a sign of a major problem. Has your boy got any pain medication?

Please keep your boy topped up; he needs about 120ml over the course 24 hours as well as fluids.

The vet has checked his front and back teeth and said they are all fine (I'm kind of glad because we have another guinea pig who is missing a back tooth so the one above it has to be filed every 4-5 months under anaesthetic :( ) He is just on the meloxidyl pain releif at the monent and I am in Cheshire, the vets we go to are really good, but I don't think they are guinea pig specialists.
