My Guinea Pigs Are Acting Strange!

Weighing is a great idea. Hay is the main part of their diet and essential for keeping their digestive system flowng smoothly. Have you tried them on some fresh herbs like coriander or parsley, or maybe some watercress? They can often encourage a bit if interest in other things.

Ive tried giving them their absolute favourite which is parsley but they wouldnt even have that! What other herbs can piggies eat? I have some basil and mint but I have never heard if you could/couldn't feed it to them. I put some pepper in a bowl and one of them ate a few pieces which is great.

Sounds exactly like my two piggies! I found one of them munching on a tiny bit of pepper a few minutes ago which I hope is a good sign

I didnt have any coriander but I will buy some today and see what they think of it. I think they really quite liked the mint and basil though as I left a few leaves scattered about and soon after they were all gone!

I did notice that they weren't so keen on eating from my hand but when I left it in the cage, they ate it. I'm really hoping that they start eating normally soon.

Oh yes I forgot about weighing them so thanks for the reminder. Just by looking at them, they don't look like they've lost a lot of weight since Saturday but I will be weighing them to check.

Goodness I didn't realise they were such little babies! I can be more laid back about mine's eating problems as they are adults.

Today I noticed that Snowball was nibbling on her own bottom and then eating, which I guess means that she is eating her own poop. I've read online that this is normal behaviour so I dismissed it. Then I noticed that my other guinea pig, Coffee, was walking up to Snowball's rear end. She's doing this quite a few times now and I realized that Snowball was squeaking a lot so naturally I checked if Coffee was causing any harm. However, there weren't any marks left. Is Coffee eating Snowball's poops? It could be due to the fact that Snowball is eating better than Coffee so maybe she feels the need to have more nutrition?

Sometimes they'll eat other piggies poops, if they're needing more gut flora than they're producing themselves.

Ive heard its normal but Snowball's reactions are really bothering me. She squeaks like crazy when Coffee's anywhere near her! I did check all over if Snowball had any bite marks but there's nothing to be found.

Ive also noticed that Snowball is going back to normal. She's being eating a lot more hay and pellets and even is eating some pepper and herbs! Coffee is doing a little bit better but I'm still going to be handfeeding her until she's eating more herself.

It is usually a submission thing and can sound a lot worse to us. Our baby Robyn is the same and shouts her head off when her mum goes near her a lot of the time.

That's good to hear. So is there anything I should do about it? Or just leave the two piggies alone?
