Hi, I'm new to this forum and am concerned about my guinea pigs. We had 2 guinea pigs, but one died so we got another one from a rescue centre on Saturday (3 days ago) to keep company. They used to live with my boyfriend's parents but because they didn't handle them when my boyfriend wasn't home (every other weekend) I offered to have them come live with me so they could get lots of love.

On Sunday night they ate a lot of hay but haven't eaten much else since I don't think. They haven't eaten pellets or veggies and haven't drunk a lot of water (I've seen them both drink some). They just seem to want to lie down a lot. I've had them both out for cuddles a few times and they seem okay but I am so worried! Are they ill? Do they need to go the vets? What should I do?

How long have the guinea pigs been at your house? When i adopted two sows about a year ago they took ages to settle in and didnt seem to drink or eat very much. However once they had settled in they were greedy as anything! Some guinea pigs just take alot of time to get used to a new home, sounds and people. Id check their teeth to make sure everythings ok and just let them get used to everything

So they haven't eaten anything since Sunday night? So know dry food, hay or veg? Are they pooing and weeing? Can you separate then to then determine how much each has eaten. Can you see any noticeable signs of illness? Such as coughing, sneezing, runny nose and eyes, any blood? If your worried then have a vet see them.

I can't believe this, but the new rescue guinea pig has just died. As in during the past half hour. I don't know what to do or think. I have the other one out now because she was sat next to her. I've been checking on them all day, and fed and watered them within the past hour. Please give me some advice, I am so lost. Do you think that the rescue centre could have known she was ill, or was a dodgy. Should I take my original one to the vet? Please help me.

I would suggest taking them to a vet as a precaution. We lost a pig recently that stopped eating. It was a Saturday evening that I noticed he hadn't eaten and my sons birthday. I put him in a small plastic crate to see if he was eating at all and intended to take him to the vet first thing on the Monday morning. I gave him Honey and water from a syringe to keep him hydrated but he died in the early hours of Monday morning. Reading up on it now I think he had bloat.

Oh gosh, how awful. I would definitely take the other to the vet as a precaution. Just to be on the safe side. Has she eaten at all in the last 24 hours? It is very important for guinea pigs to keep eating to keep their guts stimulated. Hay is the most important.
I hope you get to see the vet as soon as possible to get her checked over. Fingers crossed everything is ok.

So thats 2 pigs that have died? Get the remaining pig to a vet asap, scrub out the hutch with animal friendly disinfectant and hot water and also there food bowls and hidey houses etx, put fresh bedding and food etc down this could be a contagious disease or illness with 2 pigs dieing? I'm so sorry x

I'm so sorry :( I think I would take the surviving one to the vets and contact the rescue centre to see if they had noticed anything wrong with your rescued one before it came to you. Do you know what your original one died of?

I hope you get some answers and that your remaining piggy is ok. x>>

Thank you for all your help everyone. The first guinea pig that we had that died did so a few weeks ago now. She had a kidney disease that the vet said wasn't contagious and had to be put to sleep. So I know the 2 aren't connected. I will get in touch with the rescue centre and keep a very close eye on the other guinea pig. She seems okay and very active and happy but if I notice she doesn't eat anything I will take her to the vet tomorrow.

Hi, just wanted to update you. Guinea pig is fine, she's eating a lot (pellets, veg and hay) and drinking. Seems very happy, thank you all again.

So glad to hear she seems ok. x>>What did the rescue say about the one you lost?

Thank you :) The woman at the rescue said she seemed fine when we took her home, and she didn't know what could be wrong. She said 'it could be anything'.

well thats not very helpful. was it a rescue on here?

hopefully your remaining girl is ok xx

Oh no :( I'm so sorry. Was it a guinea pig rescue or an animal shelter of sorts? I would take the remaining one to the vet ASAP. My first piggy had a URI but she didn't start showing major symptoms till it was too late, she ended up passing :( Some of her symptoms were not eating and drinking though, she had lost a ton of weight in her final days. I hope everything turns out okay. Try to give the cage a good scrub just in case their in some sort of bacteria or something.
