So today I was taking my Guinea pig out of his cage and then he's squirmed out of my hands and landed on the floor! I looked in his mouth and there was blood on his upper lip and in his mouth a little. I discovered that his tooth was loose! We have no small animal hospitals near by. I'm afraid that his gum is damaged or his root is exposed! What should I do?

I'm so sorry to hear about this accident, I would gently dab around the tooth with a cloth to clean it, and then keep him quiet until the vet could be seen :tu:

He should be ok for now, but you will need to see a vet at some point in the next few days about this. If a front tooth is malaligned and not sorted correctly then you can have issues long term so it's best to see a piggy savvy vet.

Get to a vet when you are able to make sure there is no other damage. I had a piggy face plant the patio before and she was extremely lucky to have a graze to her face and cracked her tooth just above the gum line. In my instance she was very lucky and after a couple of days the tooth came out and the bit under the gum carried on growing and she was back to normal with two top teeth again in no time.

Having a gap around the tooth (or if it does fall out) means infection might get inside, so you should keep an eye out for abscesses:)

I have had this kind of accident before and is it not necessarily very serious. Often the tooth will break just below the gum line and takes a little while to fall out. In most cases, the tooth grows back with no problems and within a few days the pig has enough tooth to eat properly and grind the teeth naturally again. Keep an eye on it and if you have any worries see the vet.

Thanks! He is doing better and both teeth are out now. We are going to see a vet tomorrow.
