My piggy Rosie is really acting out of character. He's usually really active and loves to run about but recently he just sits in the corner of his hutch. He's not eating as much as he normally does and dosn't seem too intrested when i put him out on the grass. He's lost alot of weight and is 6 years old do you think this is down to his age? :(

Welcome to the forum.

It sounds like he is probably ill. His age may be playing a part, but if he's changed very dramatically there is a high chance it's an illness.

Is he eating? Drinking? Peeing and pooping ok? How much weight has he lost in what period of time?

I would highly recommend seeing a vet so he can have a thorough checkover. Whereabouts are you? We may be able to advise of an experienced vet in your area.

He is eating some of his vegetables and very little dried food. He is drinking only a small amount of water and is going to the toilet very regularly. His weight has started dropping very recently and i would say he has lost around half of his body weight in less than two months. I have fed him more vegetables and treats recently to try and increase his weight but nothing seems to be helping him. I will take him to our local vet A.S.A.P.

Thanks for the advice :) Veggiepig x

Veggiepig I agree that you should pop him along to the vets just to make sure. It sounds though as if you are doing everything you can in the meantime.

Thankyou Laura-CCC4, Romily and Wiebke :) I'm hoping he will pick up soon. He's the oldest of my five piggys and has always been in good health untill now. I put vitamin drops in his water and give him plenty of veg, dried food and hay but he just dosn't seem to be getting any better. :( I'm checking him every few hours to see if he's okay and at the moment he's taking a nap :)

I'm not looking forward to the vets as he gets very stressed. Has anyone got any cures?

Thanks Veggiepig x

It does sound like he is very loved, I understand your concern. Age-related weight loss tends to be rather gradual and the pig seems to thin out slowly as opposed to a drastic loss, and it does sound concerning that he's lost so much in what is essentially a short space of time. The cause may be an age-related illness, but the weight loss may not be solely because of his age, if you see what I mean. :)

I would recommend weighing him daily until he's back on the right track, as actual weight loss figures can be very useful for the vet especially if the vet has never seen the piggie before.

Bach Rescue Remedy can be given to piggies, you can try either a drop on the tongue (using a syringe or pipette, not the glass dropper) or 1-2 drops rubbed into the back of the ear, around 10-20 minutes before you leave for the appointment.

Thankyou you've all been really helpful :) Hopefully with all your advice he'll be on the mend soon x :)

Thanks again x Veggiepig x

PS. Just out of intrest can you see my display picture as i uploaded it but i can't
see it? :)
