Hello,

My piggy Percy has gone under an op for bladder stone removal last week. I got told by the vet that he may still bleed the next few days, which he did then it cleared up.

He was in still in abit of pain when going to the toilet but he had a check up appointment on Thursday and I told her that and she's advised us on keeping him on his pain meds until next week, but other than that she seemed happy with his wound as it's healing nicely and he's back to his normal cheeky chatty self.

Then on Friday morning, I got up for work and noticed he has had blood in his wee again. I thought maybe it was from the red pepper so i didn't feed him any that night, then the next morning there was small blobs of blood still in his wee. He's still in pain when going to the toilet. He has a check up again this Thursday coming.

Has his surgery been unsuccessful?

I didn’t want your thread to go unanswered for now. I’m sorry I don’t know about stones.
What dosage is he on for painkiller?
I would try and get him an appointment on Monday, or at least ring and speak to the vet. I’ll tag @Wiebke and @Abi_nurse hopefully they can answer you, and other people as well.

Hi and welcome!

I am very sorry. What painkiller dosage is he on and is it cat or dog metacam?

If possible, please have him checked sooner. Your boy may suffer from bladder trauma (damage to the bladder walls), cystitis (infection/inflammation of the walls of the urinary tract or have passed more stones, possibly into the urethra.

Please follow our diet tips for guinea pigs with urinary tract issues. The diet won't come through immediately but it will reduce the risk of more stones forming in the longer term. Long Term Balanced General And Special Needs Guinea Pig Diets

I would also very strongly recommend to give a glucosamine based cat food supplement (the other pet species prone to urinary tract problems) to help replenish and protect the natural glucosamine coating of the bladder and urinary tract walls. This is a great help to ease the discomfort in this area and help to heal the damage from the bladder stone. The UK brand is called cystease; give the contents of 1 capsule per day; ideally mixed with 2 ml of water and syringed at 1 ml every 12 hours. Cystease and comparable cat bladder supplements are easily available online.

Please have him seen sooner than next Thursday. Bloody pees are not unusual in the first day or two but you do not want to see any actual bleeding at this stage.

This needs investigating by your vet. All we can do on here is make a judgment about the seriousness, but we can't lay the finger on it and diagnose without a hands-on examination, nor are we qualified.

It is frustrating when the recovery after an operation is not going to plan; but you still have your boy. Please take a deep breath and concentrate on keeping him well.

It would still help if you told us what level of pain medication he is on; that is an area we can advise you on.

He's not weeing blood all the time. His wee is pretty clear. Just the odd time there will be little bits of redness in his wee. I will try and phone them on Monday to get him in as they aren't open tomorrow.

The medication he's been given is Meloxicam and is on 0.5ml for that one. The other one is Enrofloxacin and was on 0.16ml but I've been told to stop that one and only give the Meloxicam until his next appointment.

Hi!

Can you check whether the meloxicam you have been given is for cats or dogs and whether it has been prescribed once or twice daily? Meloxicam is another brand name for metacam, which is also prescribed under the name of meloxidyl or loxicom.

Enroflaxacin is usually better known as baytril; enroflaxacin is the active ingredient in the antibiotic.

It says it's for cats and I have to give him it once daily with food.

Hi! You can up the meloxicam dosage considerably when in discomfort. Unlike with cats or dogs, guinea pig kidneys deal a lot better with metacam and can cope with higher amounts even for the long term. Because of the much faster metabolism in guinea pigs, give metacam and antibiotics twice daily rather than once daily. In antibiotics you halve the dosage; in analgesics you can give a low dosage twice because it it is processed so quickly.

You can comfortably give the same dosage (0.5 ml cat metacam) twice daily; it is still very much at the lower end of pain relief. In your case, you can safely give up to 1 ml of cat0 metacam twice daily to a piggy in major pain (which bladder related problems are) and not have to worry; that is four times the amount your piggy is on. My tiny old lady Hedydd is currently on even higher at the sharp end of arthtritis. ;)

Vets with not a lot of experience with small rodent pets tend to underprescribe painkillers as they often work down from cats.
