Well the pigs are manky and minging again!

Maggie still isn't right after her URI. She's only been snuffly and snorty with it intermittently, mainly when stressed, although not exclusively. She's had baytril, septrin and marbocyl, with some frusemide and metacam, and it seemed to clear. However I noticed yesterday that she had noisy breathing again mallethead it's not crackly, it's more raspy.

Not going to bombard her with any more antibiotics...she's not "unwell", she seems absolutely fine, so we're going to reintroduce the metacam/loxicom and try nebulisation. She's already on fleece and Has dust extracted hay etc. so there's not much else I can do husbandry-wise.

Then there's Big Dave...

Big Dave had a penis infection. He was treated with baytril, septrin and loxicom, and had it bathed twice a day. Yesterday was the first day I didn't bathe it, today he's all manky and ick and smelly again mallethead So, now we're going down the line of could it be fungal. He's having his hits canestened 3 times a day. If that doesn't clear it, then it'll be swabs and cultures etc. rolleyes

Aww poor babies. It is horrible they are both poorly. I really hope they get better soon. Sending them lots of kisses.xoxo

They're not really poorly luckily! They're both maintaining their weight spot on, just both a bit ick! I'll pass your kisses on to Maggie, but Dave is a bit stinky so I'll give him a miss :))

I will blow them both kisses just to be safe - have a nice weekend.

Hi Amanada

Sorry to hear all of this.

Ref: Mags -
a) Do you want to borrow a nebuliser as i can lend you one
b) I found with Grommie's breathing it was a combination of fluid developing on the lungs (so we periodically upped his frusemaide) and a snotty nose (so I used to hold him over a plastic container containing hot water and vicks bubble bath) Grommie was never offically diagnosed as a heart pig - but I have had a recent case with Mr Alan Maggots which might be esepcially relevant for MAgs
c) Ultrasound revealed that Mr Maggots has the heeat issue where he has a "cauliflower" growth due to a bacterial infection lodging by the heart valve and preventing it from working properly (and if I recall Maggie Maggots came from a similar situation as Alan Maggots). Alan;s breathing issues appeared suddenly, was firstly put down to veggies in diet, his heart sounded fine but I suspected summat was up so persisted. Finally once an ultrasound/full blood work-up was agreed to the problem was finally diagnosed - quite comon in cats, dogs and humans I believe?

Ref Big Dave:
We never got to the bottom of Bandit's stinky willy - despire cultures, fungal creams etc etc (including surolan) and also regular hibiscrub with sudocream. In the end i just had to accept he had a stinky willy that needed cleaning at least once a week :)>>>

However - One thing I did read on Guinea lynx that interested me was a piggie in the US with th same embarassing problem and was diagnosed with aerococcus.

That's about all the pointers i can give on this - hugs to you all.

x

Poor you! I can be wearying when problems just not clear up properly.

Have you had Maggie checked for potential heart problems; persistent and repeating URIs can be a symptoms for that. Has she ever been tried on a diuretic like frusemide to see if that makes things better?

Aww, poor Big Dave :))
Get well wishes to both of them. I'm glad they aren't poorly as such, just a bit icky! Hopefully Dave's penis will clear up soon and I hope Maggie is ok :)

Awwww :( Sounds like they all need a big huge and get well soon kisseys x)

Bit sad for them really, when they should be enjoying a second honeymoon together that neither of them are up for it as it were :x
Big kisses to them both XX but do remind Big Dave that I did warn him of the dangers of over use rolleyes

Thanks for that info :)

Thank you for the offer of a nebuliser - how expensive are those things?! She's been being nebulised QID since Friday evening, and it's a bit hard to see if there's any response yet. Friday her resp rate was high, compared to Big Dave's, but yesterday and today it is normal (exactly the same as Big Dave's!) so it's likely that Friday was just stress.

She is sneezing once or twice during nebulisation, but that's probably just because of what it is? She's very tolerant of it when there's a bit of a bribe involved :))

Her breathing hasn't worsened, it's not crackly or raspy or anything, it's just...noisy. You can't really hear it unless she's having a sniff, but it's obviously loud on auscultation.

She's going to stay at the vets until tomorrow so they can continue to nebulise her and assess her response. We have an account with a chemist up the road, so I'm going to order a nebuliser that way, get it put onto my vet account and then claim it back on Maggie's insurance (if it turns out nebulising has no real benefit for her, then I'm sure I'll benefit from it! I did consider getting one on prescription from my doctor :)))

How was Alan Maggots' growthy thing diagnosed? Was it through bloods or US or both? Do you know the name of it? Is he on any treatment? At the moment Maggie isn't "unwell" - her chest isn't fluidy in the slightest, it's very clear, it seems to be upper respiratory noise. Sorry, 100 questions! :))

As for Big Dave - there's improvement with the canesten :) Hopefully that means it's fungal, and it's clearing up! If not, then it'll be swabs and stuff, but according to the nurses (I've not looked yet as he's not due more canesten for a couple of hours) so hopefully it's just some fungal ick!

She's not had anything done yet, as it's only been going on for abuot 2 weeks intermittently. Thought it was a URI that cleared, but who knows ?/

Nebuliser is about £50 - here's the one I bought

Alan Maggots condition is endocarditis - damage to heart asa secondary conidition following a (possibly asymptomatic) infection - strep and staph are the normal culprits. Characterised by cauliflower growths on the heart valves or ulceration of the leaflets and diagnosed by ultrasound not bloods.

He is on the usual fortekor and fruseamide but needs occasional big doses of fruseamide to help his breathing when the fluid builds up.

Hope you have some joy with the canestan!

The Canestan is a joy in itself rolleyes - he's looking "normal" downstairs now, so hopefully a few more days and that'll be the last of it...I sure hope so! :)>>>

I've left the pair of them at the vets, going to get them to order me a nebuliser tomorrow. I'm still not sure if it's having any effect, but it's not going to hurt to have one for future use if it's not.

I did notice today, that her ears and toes were very very pink today. Temperature was 38.2C, so not sure if this is relevant to anything ?/ Everyone is generally a bit confused. Think I'm going to do some research (research vs revision for a resit tomorrow...hmmmm @)) and see about chest xrays/US etc.

FAO Pebble - and anyone else who may know....

Just been looking at some info online...

What do you think of this xray?
