My parents came up today as Dad needed to take my ceiling fans down ready for the move.

Now I had ummm 'forgotten' to mention we had adopted Cadbury but figured since he spends a majority of his time in a hidey I didn't think she would notice our new piggie.

She sat herself down and before she even said hello or put the kettle on she came out with "there's three hamsters in that cage!" lol.

When I corrected her she just looked at me and said "hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs...they're all the same!"

Anyone elses family come out with daft things about your piggies?

My family only think i have pixie! they dont know about Elf Harry Toffee or Max! They would fall out with me as they dont understand why I like animals. Fair enough my mum has a dog but not through choice! Parents can be ignorant creatures :))

The amount of people who've called my piggies "Hamsters"! :))

neither of my parents quite get my love of piggies. My mum really quite likes them but thinks 2 is plenty and they're a passing fad.

My dad is fine as long as I don't spend any money on them.
Went to P@H today and spent £30 and he couldn't believe it and was asking me if I really needed each item that I had bought.

The funny this is...I originally wanted a hamster. Until a few weeks before Christmas 2008, I was looking at Hammy cages and my dad caught sight of a Hamster and said he really didn't want me to have one as they were "creepy".
So I joked and said "Let me have a Guinea Pig instead."
"Okay!" he quite quickly replied. I said "You realise you have to get 2, right?"
"Yes, yes, that's fine. I suppose we'll need a bigger cage! Let's go see what we can find."
And then it began... :)) So really, it's HIS fault that I'm a cavy slave.

god yes!Everytime my mum sees my guinea pigd she tells them "ohh you'd make great slippers!",nice huh!,thank god i know shes joking.................i hope:...

My Dad calls them gerbils all the time. And he doesn't know about Nala and Hermione who came to live with me yesterday rolleyes

I get the impression Mum thinks it's going to cost me too much to look after my three...but I haven't noticed any increase in cost.

I had an African grey parrot years ago called George (my ex took him when we separated). My ex used to tell him to say hello to "grandma" to which she always replied "I'm not being grandma to a bloody parrot"!

Wait till the vets bills start coming in, ive just been hit with a bill of £150 and its still rising, worth every penny though for my little Millie.
My mom and dad quite like our pigs as i had them as a child when i lived at home, its my husband i have trouble with, he said we couldnt have any so one day i said to him "i dont want to argue but i need to tell you something...the Guinea Pigs are coming!" he still refuses to have anything to do with them 18 months on and numbers rose to 4 pigs in the living room, how funny, i dare not tell him how much the vets cost!:)):)):))

Yes I'm quite worried about vets bills in the future...I know they do pet insurance for cats and dogs...is there one for piggies? If not there should be as they live for quite a long time.

There is!

there are a few exotic pet insurers. Might want to ask your vet for a specific one...I'm always worried about getting scammed. Some of them don't list piggies on their site but I think if you call them, they sort it out and will cover you.

This is the one my vet gave me: http://www.exoticdirect.co.uk/index.php?fuseaction=home.main
They don't list piggies on their site but he did say that if you call them, they should cover them...I'm not 100% sure. But hey, just in case you're interested.
I really should insure mine...

LOL My parents love animals but my mum did object to being Great-grandma to my sisters rescue rat babies. :))

Lol was it because you said great grandma or because it was baby rats? I must admit I'm ok with mice, gerbils, hamsters and of course piggies...but rats...they freak me out!

I called quite few places and no one did it, it would cost a fortune any way to insure all the different pigs, i keep saying I'm going to put some money aside every pay day for future vets bills but it hasnt happened yet! :))

hi, i checked out insurance for pigs after my two pigs started with problems in June, but its sooooo expensive i decided to leave it. I put away money every month for my dogs and pigs, but have now used it all up with the pigs not to mention losing both pigs :( anyway, i have carried on putting away and it is building up again, but i have decided to insure my dogs at least now for a few years, but still put away as much as i can for the pigs that i got today :(|) and fingers crossed it will all work out right :o

I got my whippet in June 2008 and by September i had spent £850 on an op for him getting a ball removed from his stomach following him playing ball! I defo learnt my lesson and am still paying for it, and will be for another year mallethead

They do cover piggies! I just got a quote for my three for up to £2000 vet cover for £242 a year...think I will have to get a policy!

Forgot to add you can pay monthly which makes it easier to afford...would be interesting to see what a quote would be for someone with more piggies.

my mom is great grandma to all of my sisters rat litters. she couldn't care less, as we all love the pinkies. i don't understand why people get freaked out by rats. my sisters are all the most stunning little critters.

my entire family is odd about animals. we love them to pieces though. my sister calls my geckos a 'mess of melted fruit pastels'. even though my crestie is brown and orange. not really fruit pastel colours :))

mom is 'grandma' to the hoards of animals here. but no one understands why i have a thing for my piggles. they tend to get called 'guinea rats', but that
isn't an insult at my house...

One of my friends once called them guinea rabbits lol oh how we laughed ive never let her live it down :{

My sister was making a big deal about the great grandma thing :)) My mum didn't mind being a rat grandma but drew the line at the "great"

At home my mum and i share a love for piggys- although she has drawn the line at 6 (it was four but then we saw a piccy of Ralph and Jasper and she 'enquired' about them!) my siblings do not love pigs, my sister has told me that we are not getting any more pigs, because her friends think it is wierd to have so many (i responded to that by saying well it is none of your business, and you can tell your b****y friends that they are mine and are lovely)

My dad often tells me how good they would be in a stew!
xx

My sisters boyfriend keeps saying my piggies would look lovely in a baguette kind of like a guinea pig hotdog. I've told him if he tries it I'll feed him to the chickens

my dad calls them hamsters sometimes, and my little bro says i am getting mouses
