I have noticed that Leo (Basil) started making 'Hooting' sound he doesn't do it often, I thought maybe it was a male guinea pig sound so I wasn't worried but then I started to look around the internet and found it could be a heart condition!
I literally can not even begin to think of loosing him! I have only had him 3 days but he is perfect. I love him so much already but now I am scared to the point I cannot even explain. I don't think I can take him to a vet either I don't really have the money to pay out for medicines, my parents with probably say that it is nothing to worry about as well since he is fine otherwise, healthy eyes, poop, appetite. Everything just this hooting.

I am seriously terrified now. Please help.
(I appologise for the frantic post again)

It's like a "boooop!" Kind of sound that he makes at least everyday I have had him, but not constantly. :(

Hi. I would suggest taking him to a cavy savvy vet asap. I understand that hooting can be heart or respiratory problems. He really sounds like he needs a vet!

hope things are ok

xx

Firstly please try not to panic even though I know it is hard as I have been there myself. Yes, hooting is a sign of a heart condition or URI but not always.

One of my girls occasionally hoots. When I first heard her do it, I was like you. I took her to the vets where he listened to her heart, lungs and airways and she is perfectly fine and healthy. He explained that it could be either and allergy to something or just something that she does. I admit, when she does it, she sounds awful but it doesn't last for long and she hasn't done it for over a week now.

My vet asked me to take her back 2 to 3 weeks later just so he could have another listen and double check a URI wasn't brewing. Again, she was fine.

I suggest you take Leo to the vet and ask for his heart, lungs and airways to be listened to. If the vet notices anything abnormal, an x ray or ultrasound can be done. If the heart looks bigger than it should be, then this can indicate a problem with the heart.

If Leo was to have a heart condition, you have caught it early and there are many piggies who have gone on to live full and normal lives with the correct medication and care.

Try not to worry :)

Ditto xx

Can't put it better than Clare has, try not to worry and get him checked over. Sometimes they can hoot after rummaging around in hay or if they are bedded on wood shavings as it can irritate their airways, Treacle will sometimes hoot after she has ate too quick and has picked up some dust with it.

A check over at the vets will sort him out and put your mind at rest.

Thank you all you are being so supportive, I contacted the RSPCA today as well to see if perhaps he has done this whilst with them, he was there for a while so perhaps they could shed some light on it.
He is doing well, but both him and Zee misbehaved during floor time today so I was sad about that. :)
Zee backed up to my dads foot and peed on him then Mr Leo was trying to eat my mums **** rug, literally violently tugging at the strands so they both went back in after about 10 mins. Naughty piggles. I think they are frustrated that they can smell each other but not actually touch...poor bubba's.

"I am a good boy...really" How could you not believe him?

If i were you, I would put them back together and only separate if they get aggressive towards each other and fight xx

The reason they arent together is because Leo was only neutered resently so he is still fertile so I can't have them together. Otherwise I would be right in there with them, lol.

Sorry, I misread your post and thought you had two boys :red yes, best not to put them together yet :))

Not to worry, it's fine.
:))

If you read two male names it's because I renamed the piggie I rescued from the RSPCA and called him Leo but his name was origanlly Basil.
