blossom, as she has now been named, had to go to the vets today. you may remember that she was a rescue piggy that i took in who had mites - only we found she was pregnant so treating her was difficult. well she had her babies on thursday night (as shown in another thread) and she is in such a state today. i had originally been told to treat the mites about a week after the babies were born but i could not risk waiting any longer. when i went to feed them this morning, all her fur has gone off her back and she is covered in nasty sores. the vet has been golden with her. he has treated the mites as he had no choice - he told me the stress of giving birth has probably made her worse and i would loose her if she didn't have the treatment straight away. she now has antibiotics too so should start picking up hopefully pretty soon. he checked all 5 of her babies and said they are fit and well. i was quite surprised too as the bill was only £22.00 which i was really pleased about. at least she is safe with me and will be treated and cared for properly - she can start her new life now in comfort

£22.00 , is a great price !

A few years ago, I adopted sow that self mutilated after pup birth , Vet said it was due to her being to old ,(the trauma of her having to stretch her pelvic bone) luckily pups and mum were fine , though mum took a few weeks for her wounds to heal .

Best of luck with your new mum

Poor little mummy! The stress of a pregnancy can really wreck havoc with a weakened piggy. I hope that she recovers well and quickly.

At least she has you now, to take care of her, so she can take care of her little ones in safety and comfort :)p Very best wheeky wishes, for good health for Blossom and her new little family ^)

Aw, poor mummypig :( Hope she has a speedy recovery :rose
That is a great fee for a vet - I paid £40+ recently just for a five minute consultation then had to pay for antibiotics on top rolleyes
Who do you use if you don't mind me asking ?

i go to straitons at penkridge. i know i have to travel but its not that far -straight up the stafford road -and i refuse to go anywhere else. they have always been brilliant and highly recommend them to anyone. i always try to see craig if possible but if he's fully booked i don't mind seeing the others. it's just that craig knows me and my animals and understands there needs. give them a try, you can't lose anything.

Ooh, not too far from us then. We're in Tettenhall :)p

i really do think they are the best around. i have on the odd occasion gone elsewhere but after very negative results always gone back to straitons. i used to live in cannock but when i moved over here thought it was easier to go local but not at the expense of my animals lives.
this is a link to there website - i hope i am allowed to put this on

also this might be of some use to you.
the treatment costs today were:
consultation £16.05
baytril 2.5% oral £3.32
baytril injection 2.5% £3.08
you may get an idea of their costs from this

we are a week on from visiting the vets with blossom. after giving birth she was really poorly. she had been suffering from mites and of course couldn't be treated while pregnant. these and the stress of giving birth really put her through it.
this is her last saturday
http://
she has been really poorly and there was a day in the week that i wondered if she would make it.:0:0 then the next day she just seemed on top of the world and loads better. this is her having her medication
http://
she is so much better now and looking forward to moving into her custom built hutch with her little girls:):)

Poor, poor girl! That really is about as bad as they come!

Great that mummy is making it through and is now getting better without the additional stress of the pregnancy. She will need some pampering for some time to come, but I am sure that you are giving her that in spades!
