This is Bumble my gorgeous new piggy. I only got him on Friday and I think he is poorly. I just think he is losing weight and a is bit 'out of sorts' if you know what I mean.

Well I weighed him on Monday and he was 387grams and I weighed him today and he is only 385grams. He seems to be eating and drinking ok. Have checked his teeth and his bottom and he seems okay but he is really thin. I've got 4 week old babies and they are 319 grams and have gained 10 grams since Monday while Bumble has lost 2 grams.

What can I do ? is this urgent ? maybe he is fretting or not settling in but he does seem ok in all other respects. He's supposed to be 10 weeks old but at that weight I wonder ?

Any help or advice will be greatfully received.

what makes you think he isnt well? anything unusual about him? his behaviour changed?

i really wouldnt worry about 2g :)

Hiya,

Aww poor little thing. Do you weigh on a full tummy? I weigh first thing in the morning that way I get an accurate reading. I would imagine he is not 10 weeks old. When I got Eccles he was 450g and I was told he was about 8 weeks old give or take. I think this little lad is a lot younger. If he is eating then thats fab just watch the weigh over the next couple of days and see how he goes.

Try not to stress.

I don't know what it is that is making me have these feelings. I have seven other pigs and I've never thought this before. He is very very laid back to the point where you can do almost anything to him and he just lets you ..... almost like a poseable doll. He just seems so very thin. You can feel his little ribs. He doesn't look so thin because of his thick fur but he feels thin....even compared to my babies.

I am watching him like a mad woman looking for signs so maybe it is just me being a little crazy but all my baby pigs have gained around 10 grams and he has lost 2.

Isn't 387grams little for 10 weeks ?

if your worried why not take him to a vet for a check over? it may put your midn to rest :)

piggies can go up and down in weight and 2grams isnt really notice able or anything to worry about, maybe he is younger than 10weeks, all piggies weigh different amounts :)

He is a rex though and they are extremely laid back I have a rex/texel and my God you would think he was asleep all the time he is so dosy Hels have a Merino too and she thought the same with Sabine but turns out she was just so relaxed all the time. I think it is a Rex trait.

387g is small for 10 weeks but my thinking is he is a lot younger, possibly 5 or 6. Wasn't he from P@H? There is no guarantee they have told you the truth on his age. As Kelly said 2g's is nothing to be concerned with 1-2oz fluctuations is fine 3oz go on alert 4oz then it's a vet job. But as Kelly says if you are concerned maybe take him the vet for the once over.

Hope he is ok, he's lovely! :smitten:

if you are worried i'd see a vet to put your mind at rest :) as said, 2 grams isn't a abnormal weight loss, my pigs fluctuate a bit and as also said, 1-2 oz is normal 3 on alert and 4 see a vet O0 i also agree that he's probably younger O0
if you don't see a vet just make sure he eats drinks etc. and watch his weight, but if you are really worried see a vet ;)

I also forgot to mention that his breathing sometimes seems exaggerated.... I wouldn't say gasping but you know how their little hearts can go ten to the dozen.... well his little chest seems to heave.

I know i am overreacting but you know when you get a funny feeling.

Going to weigh him in the morning and if I'm still not happy he's going to vets tomorrow....better safe than sorry is my motto.

Thanks for all your opinions so far.... keep them coming if there is any other viewpoints

Good luck with the little fella, he seems small for the age he's supposed to be but then like everyone else says, the age you were told might not be right and 2g is very little.

BUT from my experience, if you've got a bad feeling about him then worth a trip to the vet to put your mind at rest! Sometimes you should trust your gut instinct I think.

Change of environment etc. may have caused him a bit of stress and hence slight weight loss / panting?

Hope he's ok

if you're concerned about bumble then i would say take him to the vet. after all you know him best. our zoe is a strawberry roan and she is so laid back you can do almost anything to/with her. jessie is like a rag doll piggy. hoping bumble settles in and good luck at the vet. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: when ever we get a new pet we always go to the vet for a check over anyways. sending you hugs and cuddles from me and the girls in oz :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: girls send bumble :-* :-* :-*

OMG ..... Just weighed Bumble again and he weighs 378 grams ..... now thats down 9 grams from Monday. Now either I weighed him wrong earlier or he has lost more weight which seems not possible....but then if the correct weight is 378g then he has lost more weight than I thought earlier. Took the weight this time 4 times to make sure it is correct.

Very worried now......... his breathing is laboured and he is making a kind of faint clicking sound as he breathes. he is breathing faster than the others too I would say.

are you weighing him at the same time? i.e first thing in morning, last thing at night? that can make a huge difference :)

his breathing doesnt seem right, dont want to scare you, i would defo book an appointment for the vets first thing, he should be ok till then just make sure hes kept warm :)

could this be a URI? or am i being over paranoid? :-\

I am about to do that now as I am not at all happy......... I know there is something wrong.I am not being paranoid or crazy I just know it.

Hope he is ok, they hide it well so your instinct is probably right. Keep us posted. :smitten:

My instinct was right ........ he is quite poorly :'(, Vet says he has a chest infection. He says his hydration is good (relief !) and was pleased to see he had eaten cucumber on the way to the vets. He gave him a jab and has given me 5 days supply in a syringe to give him. He has given me baytril and I asked about a probiotic but he said because he is eating well he shoudn't need one ( is that right ?). He also gave me some formula stuff to mix up and give him in case he stops eating.

I asked if I had caught it in time and his answer was 'I hope so'....

I kind of knew that his laid backness was too laid back if you know what I mean. When I picked him out of the little box he just lay limp across my hand and the vet knew straight away that wasn't right. But I pointed that out at P@H and they just said he was okay :tickedoff:. I know everyone has said Rex's are very laid back and calm but this one is almost comatose ..... now we know why >:(

My fingers and everything else is crossed because I love this little guy so much already.

Should I keep him separate from my other pigs ... I have a spare cage....what do you think ?

Any other hints and tips please....always welcome

Oh well done you! Hope the little man will be ok! I would keep him seperate from the others. My vet says that they shouldn't share the same breathing space. Vets won't commit, I asked the same with Cuzzy and he did pick up but sadly passed away a couple of weeks later. You probably know yourself they can buck up then go back down hill fast. The fact that he is eating is brilliant.

Not sure about the probiotic hopefully someone with knowledge can advise about it.

Keep us posted on him,

Louise

He still needs probotics for his gut the baytril will put him off his food a little. Re his weight he may of been from a large litter I have seen some tiddley little pigs from larger litters :)

Where could I get some probiotics from then ? Don't really like to question the vets judgement especially when I specifically asked him about it.

OMG this is wonderful you have piggievision you know when your piggie is ill O0 O0 This means you're tuned in O0 O0 O0
I can do this too O0
I'm not from the UK but i know the girls talk about getting probiotics from vets, could you not try purchasing from another one ? ? ?
I'm sure some body from the UK will be along real soon and help you O0
Sending mega heaps of wheeks and loves for this little trooper and boy is he a real little trier :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

As much as I hate the shop pets at home do one by vetark about £5 for a tub ;) My vets sell the brand.

This would be a quicker option than buying online over a bank holiday weekend when there will be no post. :)

so glad your little fella went to the vet! :smitten: and good on you for knowing your piggy so quickily as you'd only had him a week. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: sending you both hugs and cuddles :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: hoping he gets better soon. girls send :-* :-* :-*

glad to hear you got him to a vet :) well done for knowing i can usually tell if one of my little one's is under the weather although they are known for hiding illness very well O0 so well done you! your mummy senses were tingling i'm sure we have one! ;D 98)
((HUGS AND PIGGIE KISSES)) hope your little one's feeling better soon :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :-*

Aw bless him. Our little fella Huxley has had a URI but seems oK now - the baytril should sort him out, but he shoul dhave a probiotic to stop him getting a tummy upset.
Hope he starts to get better!

No reason why you can't ask your vet for a probiotic. Perhaps nip in and ask for Protexin Bio-Lapis. That's the one I've found to work best. It's not something you'd be questioning their judgement on - can't hurt to ask!

Did you introduce him to the other pigs without quarantining? Pet shop pigs are ill sooo often it's dangerous not to. Well done for getting him to a vet quickly and not listening to the ridiculous opinions of P@H!

hoping your little baby has picked up today :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: and is feeling much better :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: sending hugs and cuddles :smitten: :smitten: girls send :-* :-* :-* please keep us posted. :smitten:
