Hi,

I know it sounds unusual, but I give no pellets to my Guinea Pigs.
Like some other owners in Germany, too.
And it works, at least in Germany and if you know what you must feed to prevent a deficit.

First of all is hay (because the structure & minerals) or if possible meadow (grass and herbs) and boughs

That´s my hay with a cavy (can you see it? :)) )

Next one are veg´s and their tops (?)

50:50 structurefully vegs and tops and 50% "normal" veg, or 2/3 & 1/3

And they get "structure-food". uhm, hard to explain.
I mix different things like "Agrobs Aspero", herbs, leaves

And sometimes seeds like you can see at the picture above.

I can't spot the pig in the hay :))

Look at all those veggies, I know of a few owners over here who do not offer pellets either. Bet your piggies love that mountain of veg!

I was worried I was giving mine too much veg! Maybe I'm not. They do have pellets as well and as they are still only young and growing I don't think I'm doing any harm. Or am I? Obviously hay is plentyful as is water.

That's awesome, I'd love to have a setup and feeding regime like yours, certainly something to aspire to! Mine do get meadow hay, veggies, a handful of pellets each and some herbs and wild plants/handfuls of grass but nothing like what yours get, I'd love to offer them a more varied and natural diet. Could you possibly list the herbs and things you feed to give us some ideas?

I tried not to feed my boys pellets but sadly they broke out of the cage, ripped into the bag and ate them themselves. Well that taught me a lesson so now one guinea pig pair only has the small pellets and the other have the normal large ones. I don't like feeding them pellets but for now I have to.

I don't feed mine too many pellets I use the natural approach too and feed mine mainly hay and grasses, lots of fresh veggies and also supplement with dried leaves and herbs. I also feed my chinchillas the same way and *touchwood* I have had no teeth problems with them:)

I feed only minimal pellets, too!

You need to compensate with more fibrous veg - and I just wish that we had access to your lovely big forage! It is only available in small treat bags here in Britain. Where do you order your dry forage from? Do you know whether it can be ordered over the internet?

I get mine from a chinchilla specialist online shop and zooplus so you can get it here in the UK, worth looking around for stuff in shops too :)

I odered the food here:

http://www.hansemanns-team.de/

It´s a german shop, but they can send the food to the UK , too. (or other countries in the european union)

On the picture you can see 3 different mixuteres before i mixed them.

I will post a list later because i must translate it before .)

If anyone wants a british stockist of these items chincillas2home shop stocks most of them. I feed them to my chinnies and the guinea pigs :)
