Hi

Hope someone can advise...

I took one of my pigs (Papua) to the vets as his head started to bob manically and his balance looked compromised. The vet injected him and gave us antibiotics siting an ear infection.

Papua looked a bit better but a couple of weeks on he is still unbalanced and looks bored in his house and uneasy outside of it (ie when out to play) He can fall right off me when sat on my chest/lap.

He is nice and happy eating and drinking and still loves his friut and veg, but I'm worried now.

We will take him back, but he is very young (about 3 months or so) can he have had a stroke? antibiotics didnt help and I'm concerned.

Hope someone can advise....sorry if its a question thats been asked a million times...!

edit: 'take him back' means back to the vet, not to the breeder!

I don't have experience of this but someone will be along shortly who will be able to advise. But I do wish you well and send love and healing vibes to your piggy from myself and the boys. x x

Something is clearly not right, and I would take him back to the vet.

However, I do not have the personal experience to say whether it is an ear infection, a stroke or some neurological problem. Sorry!

Is your vet an exotics specialist? If you're in the UK someone might be able to suggest a cavy savvy vet. :)

Welcome to the forum TomTom, sorry to hear your piggie is not well.

What antibiotics was Papua given, at what dose and for how long?

It sounds like the infection is still present. A head tilt can remain permanently if an infection has been present for a long time, but this does not sound very likely in Papua's case. A neurological problem is also possible, quite uncommon though.

I would recommend seeing another vet and if necessary trying a further course of antibiotics. An anti-inflammatory may also be of benefit; if the inner ear is inflamed as a result of the infection, this will also compromise the pigs balance and stability.

thankyou for this reply Laura. Unfortunately i cant remember what it was called (the antibiotic) but what you suggest rings true....i just hope its not neurological.

I will be taking Papua back to the vet. I'd say he is 50% better than he was so hopefully its just needing more antibiotics or anti inflmatory...

I will let you know how we get on...For now he has a new load of hay and is pretty pleased with life :)

Sorry I can't advise anything but I really hope Papua continues to improve. (He has a really cute name, by the way, very clever!)
