(Apologies if this should be in the housing section only it seemed more of a behavioural problem.)

On Saturday I built my first C&C cage for my girls. I was SO excited to be getting them a bigger place! They've been with me for 15 months living in a Ferplast 120. They have floortime every day, but I’d been reading and reading about how they’d be lots better off in a bigger cage, so I saved up to buy the biggest one that would fit in my house. Their C&C cage is 4x2 with a 2x2 loft added onto the floor level to create an L shape cage (I don’t know if that counts as being 6x2?)

I thought they would be really happy in their new place, but they don’t seem all that sure about it. Prim has taken to sitting in her tunnel all day rumbling at Hazel, who’s chattering back at her non-stop. They’ve got cosies, tunnels, and I’ve created two separate places for them to hide by covering parts of the cage with blankets, plus lots of hay to munch on, but they squabble whenever they get too close to each other.

I don’t understand what I’ve done wrong. They usually get on really well. Sometimes (I think) when one goes into season there will be a day of grumpiness/rumbling/occasionally trying to mount the other, but nothing that’s ever seriously worried me.

I guess I’m wondering if one or both have come into season and that’s just happened to coincided with moving them into a new home (except it’s been going on for three days when it usually lasts one…) or if moving them has upset their little hierarchy. To be honest, I’ve never been able to work out who’s in charge – they’re both pretty laid back most of the time, but are they establishing a new pecking order? Do they hate their new home? Or could I be worrying about nothing and I’m just unlucky because they’ve come into season now? I’d really appreciate hearing what you experienced piggie slaves think might be the problem.

I'm no expert but I recon they're just re-sorting where they stand with each other in their new environment. It probably won't help if one or both come into season during this period!

I'm sure they'll be back to normal and fully appreciating their new home soon!

it is par for the course to reaffirm the hierarchy in any new territory. For sows, this can be compounded when one of them also comes into season. Unlike boars, they don't end up with full-on fights and fall-outs. Please take a deep breath and just let them get on with it. I promise, things are going to calm down soon again!

Thank you! I do hope you're right. I've just given them their evening top up of hay and they're actually managing to sit together and munch on that so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Thanks Weibke, I really appreciate the reply. (I think I just wanted them to be as excited about their new home as me!) I'll let them work things out and hope they're back to normal soon. :)

They are going to enjoy their home, don't you fear - but they work a bit more different than us. The fact that they are re-establishing their group means that they are in the middle of setting up shop for keeps. ;)
