My piggy eye looks really bad.

I haven't had her a week yet. And want to avoid lifting her up. But it looks really bad.

Her other eye is fine. And the other piggys eyes is fine.

Think I should take it to the vets. I noticed just today.

I can't see very clearly in the picture but if you do think something is wrong, you must bring her to the vet. You will have to carry her out the cage so you should already start hand feeding her so she gets used to you, even if it is very early.

Well unfortunately there's only 1 vet around my area. And they are looking £150 for her to be seen alone. But they gave me advice and said not to try and clean it or anything.

I just don't have that money atm

That will be a problem... Maybe you could search further? I've started a saving accound for my pig so if he does come up with any problems I have the money to pay for it. Maybe you could do that too? It has helped a lot over the years. Good luck xx

The picture is not clear enough, but if an eye doesn't look right, you need to have seen promptly; eye injuries can come up and deteriorate very quickly. The sooner you can treat with antibiotics (in the form of eye drops), the better the chances of a quick and smooth recovery. You need a vet to determine the eye damage with a special dye as it is often more extensive than visible with the normal eye.

I'll take her 1st thing tomorrow morning. That's all I can do unfortunately

Hay is a common cause of of eye injuries but it could be something else.

Eye injuries are not uncommon. It could be a haypoke or even a misjudged swipe of a foot from a cage mate. Many of us have had this without any knowledge of how it happened. I myself once took the piggies out for floortime and immediately noticed one had a cloudy white eye from an injury. To this day I don't know how it happened but thankfully its never happened again

My little one had an ulcer from a hay poke and was prescribed drops 2x a day but a regular vet. The healing was slow and a hard scab formed over the eye. When I finally got in to see an exotic vet, I thought for sure she was going to lose the eye! New vet gave me an anti fungal drop with a lubricating/hydrating solution to apply 3x a day and within 24 hours the scab fell off and within 10 days the eye healed beautifully so do not dispare ☺️
The only advice I can offer is to make sure that they eye stays hydrated, that was our main issue with the non-exotic vet, and something I learned the hard way.
Good luck with your piggy!

Vets gave us isathal. Altho they don't mention there for piggys.

The vast majority of medications given are not licensed for use in guinea pigs. Otherwise I think we'd just be left with baytril and metacam. Any good vet will know which cat and dog medications are safe for use in piggies. Sorry I can't remember the name of the eyedrops I was given previously

We’ve been given Isathal regularly for any piggy eye injuries. We also use it at work! It’s fairly common and a bit of a “go to” for eye injuries :)

How is your piggy’s eye today?

It doesn't look red anymore. But still abit closed over.

I've to take her too the vets at half 11. Hopefully she won't need anymore eye drops.

But I'm pritty sure she's blind in her eye.

She's been banging into things on that side. And doesn't really react to fast hand movements.

Eye is better. Just cloudy. He said to finish the drops off about once a day. And I've to take her bk next week to get drops to clear the cloudy eye up
