HI,
I woke up this morning to a poorily piggy. She was fine the night before, squeaking and playing and eating today sneezing, and wheezing. Been to the vets already and he said she has a respiratory infection, gave her anti biotic injection, and I have been told to seperate her from all the other piggies as infectious.

He said he is considering giving my 5 other piggies anti-bioticis too.... :o(

I have never managed to nurse a pig back to health yet, dispite my best efforts. She isnt eating, so I have recovery which I will give her in a minute. She is one of my rescue piggies and is only 2 1/2yrs old, I feel so bad.....

Anyone offer any advice, I have been told it is likely I will lose her, but I want o give her all the chance I can.....

Sorry to hear this - it really is a worrying time when they become ill.
The main hurdle is the effect antibiotics can have on their eating habits so research as much as you can on this especially if it causes diarrhoea :...
I have just had a piggy go through this and it was touch and go, we thought and prepared ourselves for the worst but with persistance, patience and the sheer will to keep him going, has finally paid off. He is now holding his own, eating and drinking for himself although we're still watching him very closely. I bugged my vet with calls for advice, read every thread on here re: poorly piggies to get insight, rang people who deal with these situations etc. was not letting the little fella go anywhere without a fight :( It was exhausting and 24/7 round the clock, I took time off work as I was a physical wreck and got to the point where he was so poorly, I wanted him to slip away peacefully out of love for him :0
If your vet is savvy, keep them up to date and never be afraid to ask questions - if you are not happy with them, look for a specialist. We had one on standby and registered all of our 6 piggies for any future concerns.
I really hope your piggy gets better soon, you sound determined and experienced so paws crossed for you and your little one.
Please keep us updated x>>
PS - you can PM me, I will help as much as possible or I can send my email, you only have 28 posts I notice.

its horrible when they are poorly...

are you giving critical care/science recovery...?
that might be a thought along with some fluids...

i would get a second vets opinion on the preventative treatment personally...

better to be safe than sorry...

good luck...

Sorry to hear about your little girl :...
Believe it CAN BE DONE!!! you can do it, as GPS said, lots of work and dedication! I had a piggie with lots of toofie and abscess issues, he lived way longer than was ever expected! Keep up with the syringe feeds, give all meds, use the probiotics, offer water and keep hay and pellets and some veggies there for her to pick at, keep things fresh. Don't give up -c
Keep your thread updated and people will offer help all the way along :)
Lots of healing wheeeeeeeeks for your little girl (sorry don't know her name) and whee hope she'll pull thru XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Thank you all, I have fresh veg in the cage, and hay and her normal food.

I am giving her small amounts of recovery every two hours at the mo, she had the strength to push the feed away, so I am holding on to hope, and of course water and poop soup as I call it, to help her gut flora....

Just so sad watching her. She is called bubbles and is normally so loving and cuddly....

I will keep you posted...

I know how you feel love :( Stay positive for her - it is awful forcing them to take food via a syringe but keeping her gut moving is so important. Poop soup is good as you say. My boy suffered with horrendous loose poops on the Septrin and it broke my heart seeing him filthy and smelling but armed with pet wipes and perseverance, kept him clean and dignified (he is a very proud and macho piggy always strutting around and facing his brother off) :) Good to see him almost back to normal and lording his pen again rolleyes
<<<<<<<<<<Healing vibes from us all here to little Bubbles x>>>>>>>>>>>>

You can definitely help her a lot. It sounds bad but you're doing the right thing by syringe feeding her with Critical Care from SS.

Biscuit had several URIs and was eventually diagnosed with pneumonia caused by strep. This is serious and kills a lot of piggies but with the right combination of ABs, he managed to kick it and has been fighting fit until now... with an unrelated illness.

The thing to do is watch out for gut stasis or diaorhea. Zantac is good for gut stasis but your vet will know what to do. Another step, if the ABs don't finish off the infection, is to get a culture done. This is what saved Biscuit. We'd had URI after URI and AB after AB. We got a culture done to find out what strain of bacteria was affecting him and it was strep intermediary. Then we isolated it and got the right AB - a couple of weeks later and he was finally healthy!

Sending healing vibes and best wishes
xx

I am in the same boat although I think my girl is eating but am now worried and am gonna go up and see if she has eaten her veggies. I do know that she was eating hay earlier. Where do I get the or what is the critical care that is mentioned just in case?

If you have no critical care (I didn't, mallethead) mash pellets with hot water, leave to cool then syringe. Needs to be of a consistency to draw up and expel through the syringe, my piggy actually took it from my finger. If you can get a healthy poop from another piggy, freshly laid rolleyes, mash that too - it is a great probiotic and helps balance the gut flora. Fluids, fluids and more fluids. I used a tiny piece of a soluble Vitamin C tablet in water as my piggy wouldn't eat veg when ill.
This is excellent to read:

Hay is good as it keeps their digestive system moving so make it plentiful and fresh - I gave mine half a handful every 2-3 hours and he took a few mouthfuls only per day.
Good luck :)

HI All,
I am very very sorry to say we lost Bubbles this evening. I tried every thing I knew and it still wasn't enough to save her....

She died in my arms, after giving me a little nudge under my chin like she did...

I am obviously devastated... and very concern for her cage mates now... They had a 3 level hutch and used to roam freely between the levels, with bedrooms on each level and plenty of space. I will watch them very careful..... They all seem fine right now but it is a worry.....

Are these URI spread easily amoung piggies?

Thanks for all the wonderful encouragement, I would have did any thing to save her, and already had my duvet to sleep down stairs so that I couold get up during the night and feed her but it just wasn't to be on this occasion.

At least she did not suffer, and she is at peace.

I get my critical care from the vet, although I always keep a supply in my piggy emergency box, never know when needed...

oh sweet heart I'm so sorry....
you obviously tried so hard... and she just couldnt fight anymore...

run free little piggie...8...

i'd reccomend giving everything a good disenefect if i were you....

so sorry for your loss...
x

aww Angel, so sorry to hear about Bubbles, it's devastating when we lose a piggy but thankfully she didn't suffer too much and you were with her.

Thinking of you x

I am so sorry to hear of your loss it wasn't because of lack of care from you that you can be sure of. Thankyou for letting me know about critical care I learn so much from this forum. I shall keep an eye on Coco today she has eaten some carrot.

Oh no, I'm so sorry :0
You did all you could love but Bubbles was chosen by the other little ones at the Rainbow Bridge to care for them because she is so special.
Run free forever sweet girl x>>
