Hello everyone,

Just a quick one: lately my older boar’s fur has started to become damp and smelly, most likely due to lying in his urine for long stretches of time. To make things worse he’s mostly white so it really shows! We try replacing the wet bedding daily and I even gently bathed him last night just to clean him up but he’s dirty once again, no more than a day later. My worst fear is he gets ill or develops a skin infection so any suggestions such as a suitable bedding or ways to prevent him from doing this would be really helpful! 🙂

Really you need to see a vet to find out why he is doing this. It's not a normal thing for older piggies, I have had one or two do it but they have had other health problems that caused urine leakage or caused them to sit in their own wee. I've seen ovarian cysts and arthritis cause this but it can also be from a simple uti

He’s due for a vet check up very soon due to another issue so I will definitely bring it up, thank you

Good that you have him seen by a vet.

Here is advice on how you can best look after a guinea pig whose mobility is impeded in order to prevent the problems you are worrying about; the guide also includes a list of which avenues you and your vet may want to pursue as to the cause of the problems: Looking after guinea pigs with limited or no mobility

His vet appointment has been booked - I just want my little boy to be as happy as he can be! His movement seems to be fine when he is out playing, no irregular steps or noises of pain but I will definitely read into that, thank you 🙂

When my late Bumble had arthritis it was in her spine so there were no signs at all apart from lying in her own wee and being more reluctant to move. She could still run when she wanted etc so it's always worth getting checked out. She was like a different pig again once she started daily pain relief
